STDs still on the rise, report says

I wonder if married men that fool around on their wives/girlfriends with other men or women are also to blame for the rise in STDs?

/sarcasm since no one else brought up this point

It is not sarcasm.

It is true.

You'd be surprised at how many times I've been propositioned by married men (and even married women). I always say "no" (except for a few times in the past where I said "yes" to married women..I realize now that it's not a good thing to do) and I've learned over time to question my desires and why I even bother to sleep around (with protection though).

That's why I said married people do spread STDs too....they can have affairs or they had STDs prior to getting married and didnt know about them.

That's the problem; people don't want to use self control. They prefer to trust condoms and spermicides rather than restraint.

And now we're right back to the abstinence only pphilosophy, which has been shown to contribute to the rise in STDs and teen pregnancy. "JUST SAY NO!" does not work, and in fact, creates more problems.

What do you really want:

Keep advocating "wait till youre married" and hope for the best?
Risk: People give in while being uneducated about birth control, ending in more STD/pregnancies.

Or

Advocating birth control, give people realistic options, and hope for the best?
Risk: A lot more people are going to have sex than the above scenario.

To me, the risk of people having more unprotected sex far outweighs the risk of more people having sex.

It's not the philosophy of abstinence that spreads STDs; it's the failure of people not abstaining or staying faithful that spreads STDs.

People will still continue to engage in these behaviors so it is better to educate and inform.

What she said. People can abstain by choice, but they should be informed on how to take precautions if they wish to participate in sexual activities.

And that behavior becomes more acceptable.

It's not just a matter of education and information. As much as people don't like to hear it, it's a matter of morality.

People are more educated than ever about sex and yet STDs are spreading. They can get condoms and spermicides, and yet they still catch diseases and become pregnant. So obviously education and access are not the solutions.

Whose morals? What's my morals isn't yours and vice versa.

Everyone has different morals. We cant impose our morals onto other people. As for accepting the behavior...nope, I dont accept it but I know that in reality, it will still happen. What's your solution? Mine is just keep on educating and giving access.

I dont liek the spread of STDs any more than you do.

That was not how I read what she said unless I missed another post of hers earlier.

I think I confused you. Basically, "What he/she said" is a common way of saying I agree with you.

I don't suggest that we can force moral behavior on people. We just need to face the fact that morality in general will continue to decline, and social conditions will also decline. Statistics will back me up on this.

The solution is people behaving better but that isn't going to happen. As long as people focus on their own pleasure over responsible behavior, we'll have all the associated problems.

We'll end up with a very selfish, self-righteous, educated, fully accessed population infected with STDs.

Bold font - Agreed 100%. That explains why so many people don't bother to learn self-control, self-respect, and self-displince (sp?). They are just so lust for do anything they want... =/

Using morality as an excuse to push laws onto others is dangerous as you are not taking into account the morals of people other than yourself.

You didn't read my other post. I said that I don't suggest forcing morality on people.

None of my posts in this thread said anything about pushing laws.

You don't but yet you bring up morality when talking about STDs. It's a PUBLIC HEALTH issue, not a MORALITY issue!

Yeah and they are known as "conservatives."

Here is a link showing syphilis, gonnorhea, and chylamidia and that the top 3 states in each category are conservative, Republican, God-fearing states!
