STDs still on the rise, report says

there were several criminals cases of those who knowingly spread STDs that result in deaths like HIVs being charged with murder or something. :mad2:

Interesting enough--if it was a heterosexual individual doing that--they would be charged with murder.

But if it was a homosexual individual--they don't get charged.

Big discrepency, don't you think?

Absolutely. Which is another sad statement regarding our society.

really? now that's messed up. looks like Lady Justice isn't blind after all.... :mad2:

Hi, I should have just said I was a chiropractor, but I was trying to avoid statements like 'snake-oil salesman' from ignorant people. Yes there are a lot of terrible, cooky, non-scientific chiropractors out there, but there are also a lot of terrible primary care md's, orthopods, attorneys, etc. I agree maybe a higher percentage in chiropractic. I only practice evidence-based protocols for musculoskeletal conditions. I'm not trying to cure cancer here. My profession wasn't even relevant to the discussion, but my ego was kind of hurt, so I wanted to sound important. Sorry to have offended anyone

I still don't change my views on the disccusion though....

I don't think we should abandon sex ed. in schools, I just think that parents should be more willing to step up and be educators to their children as well as role models, not only in sex ed., but all subjects in school. And that means advocating for better programs to be implemented in our schools.

hey no worry there. I'm glad you came clean. all's forgiven. Yes there are handful of crooks and shady professionals out there but it's not really an issue when it comes to debate because they don't usually participate in it unless they're paid to do so :laugh2:

it's just that thing got bad for you when you used your professional credential as authoritative backing for your posts and then it got crumbled down because of inconsistency, fallaciousness, etc. But hey.... regardless of your and our professions - we all have equal rights and that's called Amendment 1.

Feel free to pitch in! :cool2:

I know this one girl who got STDs from her boyfriend who didnt know he had it himself. They were in a monogamous relationship for a long time before having sex but he had sex with someone once before he starting dating her which was how he got the STDs and ended up giving it to her too. It was a mess between both of them with one accusing the other of cheating when neither were.

The rest of the story.
Homosexual Men Account for 65 Percent of Syphilis Cases, CDC Study Finds
Thursday, January 15, 2009
By Pete Winn, Senior Writer/Editor

(CNSNews.com) - The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says homosexual men accounted for 65 percent of the nearly 12,000 cases of syphilis in the United States in 2007, making them the “primary driver” of increased syphilis rates overall.

In a report on sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) issued Tuesday, the government said syphilis, a disease that was almost eliminated as a public health threat less than 10 years ago, is on the rise -- with cases increasing each year since 2000.

It remained a serious health threat in the United States in 2007, the latest year for which statistics are available, largely because of increased transmission among “men who have sex with men” (MSM) in the United States, according to the CDC.

Dr. Gary Rose, president of the Texas-based Medical Institute for Sexual Health, told CNSNews.com that there are several factors behind the rise.

“One of the problems for men who have sex with men is that their sexual encounters are frequently anonymous,” Rose said. “The more partners you have, the higher the risk of transmission for any sexually transmitted infections.”

Rose said the government has spent a lot of time and money promoting condoms among men who have sex with men.

“Condoms are 85 percent effective against HIV in vaginal intercourse,” he said, “but there really have been no good studies on their use in anal intercourse.”

But even among heterosexuals when condoms are used 100 percent of the time, the amount of risk-reduction is only 50 percent.

Chlamydia, meanwhile, is at an all-time high, increasing nearly 7 percent since 2006, the report said.

Rose said one thing that most people don’t understand is that gonnorhea, syphilis and Chlamydia can be transmitted through oral sex.

“That is, of course, a problem, not only for men having sex with men, but it is also an increasing problem for young people – especially black teens.”

African-Americans, who make up 12 percent of the U.S. population, accounted for almost 50 percent of syphilis and chlamydia cases (48 percent and 46 percent respectively) – and a whopping 70 percent of reported cases of gonorrhea in 2007,
CDC reported.

Young black women, 15- to 19-years-old, had the highest rates for both chlamydia (9,647 cases per 100,000 population) and gonorrhea (2,956 cases per 100,000 population) of any group.

The racial disparities in STD rates are among the worst health disparities in the nation for any health condition, according to Dr. John M. Douglas Jr., director of the CDC's division of STD preventione.

"We must intensify efforts to reach these communities with needed screening and treatment services,” Douglas said. “Testing and the knowledge of infection is a critical first step toward reducing the continued consequences of these diseases."

Knowledge is especially key to fighting Human Papillomavirus, or HPV. – a major concern of health educations, Rose said.

“The number of cases of head and neck cancer are rising significantly, because HPV attacks the tissues of the head and neck in the same way it attacks the cervix,” Rose told CNSNews.com.

HPV is a major cause of cervical cancer among women – and a woman can unknowingly have the virus for years before tumors are triggered.

CDC estimates that almost 19 million new sexually transmitted infections occur each year – with almost half of those among 15- to 24-year-olds. STDs cost the U.S. health care system as much as $15.3 billion annually.

Proof of what?

If people don't have sex beyond their marriage partners, then they won't get a sexually transmitted disease.

1) That was not your original statement.

2) Please prove your new statement, and your point.

That is SO bizarre. Why the difference? I would expect it to be reversed.

That's because STD's are most EASILY passed via ANAL SEX. Who is having the most anal sex? Gay men. deerrrrr. Which is another great reason why teens need to be told that it's VERY important to use protection when having anal sex.

Byrdie bird

Just drop it okay, like I said you don't understand my english sentences, let it go!

You need to make your points more clear and use the appropiate emoticon as that can cause mis-communication.

Probably because there is more of a disregard for the homosexual community than the heterosexual community. Plus the bias against people of different sexual orientation exists even though people claim that they aren't bias.

I didn't critque your English sentences--I mentioned about using the appropiate emoticon to convey your message.

Big difference.

But, this is still the bottom line. It doesn't matter whether it was transmitted between homosexuals or heterosexuals. The transmission still occurred, and all can benefit from more comprehensive education.

To point out the transmission rates of homosexuals is a bit like saying, "I don't need to worry about AIDS because it is a gay disease."

If you notice, I didn't point out anything about homosexuals. These are the parts that I put in bold:

"the government said syphilis, a disease that was almost eliminated as a public health threat less than 10 years ago, is on the rise"

“The more partners you have, the higher the risk of transmission for any sexually transmitted infections.”

"when condoms are used 100 percent of the time, the amount of risk-reduction is only 50 percent."

Oddly enough, the age group that has been exposed to the most sex education is the age group that has seen the biggest jump in STDs.

My points were to show that more partners mean more disease, condoms aren't a solution, and even though STD prevention education has become more wide spread, syphilis has also become more wide spread.

I don't think those are very good odds.

STD can be spread by ANYONE.

SF Shawn is right every one no matter of their sexual preferences. Needs to be educated.
