STDs still on the rise, report says

If you notice, I didn't point out anything about homosexuals. These are the parts that I put in bold:

"the government said syphilis, a disease that was almost eliminated as a public health threat less than 10 years ago, is on the rise"

“The more partners you have, the higher the risk of transmission for any sexually transmitted infections.”

"when condoms are used 100 percent of the time, the amount of risk-reduction is only 50 percent."

Oddly enough, the age group that has been exposed to the most sex education is the age group that has seen the biggest jump in STDs.

My points were to show that more partners mean more disease, condoms aren't a solution, and even though STD prevention education has become more wide spread, syphilis has also become more wide spread.

The title of the article you chose pointed it out very clearly.

Condoms are not a complete solution, no, but 50% effectiveness will still reduce transmission compared to the 0% effectiveness of no protection at all. In addition, the article was unclear about whether they were speaking of condom use alone, or condoms in combination with spermicides...the technique that is recommended by the health professionals that are truly informed.

"when condoms are used 100 percent of the time, the amount of risk-reduction is only 50 percent."

I don't think those are very good odds.

Beats the heck out of 0%, and that percentage is increased when used along with other things.

STD can be spread by ANYONE.

SF Shawn is right every one no matter of their sexual preferences. Needs to be educated.

Oh that is such a true and sorry fact!

CDC estimates that almost 19 million new sexually transmitted infections occur each year – with almost half of those among 15- to 24-year-olds. STDs cost the U.S. health care system as much as $15.3 billion annually.

But, this is still the bottom line. It doesn't matter whether it was transmitted between homosexuals or heterosexuals. The transmission still occurred, and all can benefit from more comprehensive education.

To point out the transmission rates of homosexuals is a bit like saying, "I don't need to worry about AIDS because it is a gay disease."

Or she is trying to marginalize the GLBT community.

We did that before when the AIDS epidemic hit and look where it has gotten us?!

That is SO bizarre. Why the difference? I would expect it to be reversed.

I don't know why the differential in treatment towards homosexuals vs. heterosexuals?

Maybe their attitude is let the "homosexual community kill itself off?"

Believe me--I've heard that comment several times.

THE REAL REASON WHY A MAN SHOULD STICKS WITH JUST ONE WOMAN...IT'S CALLED SAFE SEX!

You don't have to worry about catching AID, HIV and STD if you sticks with one man/woman all your life.

I don't believe in gay marriage and STD has nothing with homosexual only, also you can still get STD if you are heterosexual.

Both of homosexual or heterosexual aren't matters for STD or AIDS.

If gay people were allowed to be married--they wouldn't be contracting STDS now would they?

I'm surprised that no link about senior citizens went out. They are also at a high rate of spreading STD.

Yup!

Since Viagra came out. Sex and STD also increased among the seniors!

For real?

That, too! What are we going to do with them, or do we not worry about their transmission rates 'cuz they're gonna die soon, anyway? )j/k...so don't shoot me!

No, it's just my personal views and religion but rather not to discuss about more, it has nothing with STD.

You can still get STD if you are unmarried, being unmarried or married aren't matters.

:giggle: I'm not gonna shoot you! But I will say.... Hard to imagine the seniors getting it on. I've caught a few in the act while working in a nursing home in the past!!

They have rights as well. But hard to get them to use protection since they are set in their ways.
But on a serious note some of these seniors sleep around a lot. Not always within their age group. So the spread of STD is caused by them too.

Again...

Anyone sexually active can spread STD.

The original source for your article and mine was the same, "Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance, 2007."

That's the problem; people don't want to use self control. They prefer to trust condoms and spermicides rather than restraint.

Sex is a natural human desire so if two people who are in love want to have sex and use protection, then there is nothing wrong with that. Even married people spread STDs..

Condoms do help and if we educate more to use the "rubber" less STD would be around.

People of all ages, race, and sexual preferences should be taught to use protection and the dangers of having multiple partners.

Hard to refrain a person from having sex. It has been going on since ancient times. It was less heard of and death or illnesses of such was not dianosed.

I wonder if married men that fool around on their wives/girlfriends with other men or women are also to blame for the rise in STDs?

/sarcasm since no one else brought up this point
