not that its a bad thing but...

I don't mind one bit that there are a good number of hearing people here. There's all levels of experience -- or none, for that matter -- (whether with ASL, or having a deaf child, or being in ASL classes, etc).

What I think many of us Deaf mind are the hearing who actually correct us on things 1) our grammar, 2) what our experiences are -- i.e. we've had parents tell us "no, no, that's just not how it is" after we share school experiences -- excuse me? We LIVED it. We know how it is! Many of our stories hurt us to our very core, and 3) correcting us on terminology - we had one parent who took such offense to how the Deaf refer to their speaking skills. Again, excuse me? We lived with certain terminology all our lives -- you don't get to come in and tell us how WE can refer to ourselves. The sheer ego of some is astounding.
For those who come in and want to interact with this forum positively, you are
MORE than welcome as far as I'm concerned.

I'm just curious as to the bolded above... What about the other side of the coin? "Deafies" correcting the "hearies" spelling and grammar? Is that ok?

I absolutely embrace my viewpoint. It's unfortunate you're misinterpreting my comment. A comment that was in direct response to other posters comments. Perhaps if you looked at it for what it was, you wouldn't be so hostile towards me. I don't want anyone to leave this site. I'm sorry you don't understand that.

Not hostile at all, to you or anyone else. I am simply embracing my viewpoint. No need to take it personally.

Many of us get criticized for our grammatical errors by hearing people so we are showing the hypocrisy.

That's all.

You write better than hearies sign. Point for Shel! You write better than a lot of hearies. Another point for Shel!

A hearing person uses the wrong grammar or spelling, so a person who is d/Deaf should point it out to demonstrate the hypocrisy?

Is that what you mean? Can you clarify?

OMG! The inability to take the deaf perspective is astounding.

I figured it was a hostile post as it was removed and you apologized to other AD members. My apologies if it wasn't hostile

It was the most hostile post I have ever made here. Good thing you missed it. *shrugs*

Because many of us have been famously criticized for our poor reading and writing skills constantly. The 4th grade reading level syndrome..we are sick of it. Sick of it.

Be a woman. Say that I offended you by doing that. Say that I offended you by saying that I wouldn't share certain information with hearies.

I don't even care one bit.

BTW - The only reason I pointed that grammar error out (and I have a personal rule not to do so) is because if you were a "fluent SEE" user, you would know that affect and effect had two different signs in SEE. Then with that knowledge you teach your kid the wrong words in the wrong places. Then the kid has to clear some stuff up down the road and realizing it was because of someone with bad knowledge.

The reason: Happened to me.

spoken from a true SEE user...

You didn't offend me- more of an irritant which I found to be hypocritical and demonstrative of a double standard.

:ty: for pointing that out to me.

So then certain posters are making generalizations about hearing people as a rule, and if one was guilty then all the rest must pay?

I have not one time corrected anyone on this forum- I even refrained from correcting PFH on his grammar after he called my attention to an error I made.

It's not productive to make generalizations about people- whether they be deaf/hearing/black/white/pink or blue. In fact, we close ourselves off to opportunities when we make such hard and fast judgements on people based on one aspect of their being.

We are much more than deaf/hearing/catholic/gay/fill in the group. Sure, it's a part of us- but it doesn't define who we are.

Another indication of the inability to take the Deaf perspective.:cool2:

It gets tiresome when our cherished languguage, ASL, gets belittled on this forum as something as 2nd class to English. Just sayin'
