not that its a bad thing but...

So would HoH be included? Do I need to post my audiogram and be let in once I reach a certain level?

Maybe we all need audiograms for our signature. Being deaf is more that dBs.

I couldn't go either, I just meant as a retreat- like the AO forum on this board, but for DHH ...

one little section- it be easy just watch and see how a person speaks of themselves- especially in the intro.

(this is why I'm in a fire-proof robe)

DHH= Deaf/hard of hearing. I don't know that posting an audiogram is necessary, as that opens a whole new can of worms. I suppose if Alex or someone did that, they could work out those details.

I don't feel included to comment here but I kind of have to so I apologize beforehand if this is not appropriate.

I apologize on the behalf of the rest of the ignorant world who come in post once and never post again. It is frustrating I understand. Just know that not all of us "hearing" people suck that badly :) I came here with the intentions of not only advice, I won't lie I am here 60% in hopes of some guidance as to what is going to help my sons, but also because I am truly fascinated with ASL , the community, the language, the lifestyle all of it. I think it is beautiful and never given enough credit.

I would never want to contribute to the hiding of anybody I have been here two days and am already really excited about the possiblities of friendships.

We are very happy to have hearing people join Alldeaf. especially when those hearing people are parents of deaf children. We hope that you stick around long enough to learn about our culture and understand why we feel really strongly about some subjects. It can be frustrating to us to have someone tell us how we should think or look at something especially if that person does not understand Deaf culture. There are things that are said in the deaf communities that is perfectly acceptable but would be very wrong to say in a hearing community. It goes both ways.

It's not good enough to know what is right/wrong. You need to know why. Sometimes the why is really hard for some hearing people to understand. We try to explain but sometimes we get frustrated and the thread gets a bit overheated. And sometimes the thread gets locked and people get put in jail - meaning they get banned for a time.

Not all hearing folks can handle the bluntness of the Deaf community. We hope you can learn to see the bluntness as a positive aspect of our culture. besides, who wants to dance around an issue all day long - just get to the point so we can all move one! ;)

I probably didn't say this before (I'm avoiding the Introduction section) But, welcome to AD! :welcome:

I am originally from Baltimore cheetah! Well Laurel close enough lol. Thank you for your input. I don't scare to easily with bluntness, I am just wanting to learn and experience and expand my knowledge. I just don't like stepping on toes in areas I am a super noob to.

It's getting closer to the end of the semester, so we'll have more ASL students trying to fulfill their requirements. I know some students who are very involved in the Deaf community and they're great. These students become friends with Deaf/HOH people. Some students come to socials, sit by themselves without even trying to sign, then ask for your signature to present to their teacher. And some students are somewhere in between. That's just the way it is.

As a hearing parent, I really appreciate being able to learn from all of the AD members. I get a lot to think about by reading here.

I lurk mostly because I feel like, I'm not Deaf and don't have much to offer on the topic at this point. Other boards/other topics? I might have a lot to say.

I'm grateful to everyone who has responded to my threads, which are usually in a panic as I'm experiencing something new & am freaking out. :ty:

I know I'm uneducated, but I sure hope I'm not offensive in my ignorance.

True of any class really- you should have seen that amount of birding that went on in the last two weeks of Ornithology (supposed to be 100 different species of birds, picture and full scientific name, common name, range, diet, morphology (if applicable) )

I understand the issue from all sides.

There are some topics here people would prefer only Deaf input, other topics where they would prefer Deaf and deaf, other topics that everyone deaf including hoh, and finally topics that include anyone can join.

It's sort of like there's a city council meeting going on discussing an issue about deaf baby. All the members are Deaf and good signers, their input is highly valued for the decision.

A HoH guy walks in the door and joins in sharing his opinions, they might not like it.
A hearing person walks in the door and starts sharing their opinions, they might not like it even further.

It's something they wish to keep the topic selective for people who are an active member of that community, no different than a selective posse like:
- Kids club
- 'Members Only'
- Shareholders discussion for stock owners in X stock
- KKK: ok, very bad example but I hope the meaning is understood (not what the group does), they wouldn't let a black person in a KKK rally would they? They are only looking for the opinion of certain individuals not that it is right or wrong
- CI Parents only

Ultimately, I think the site has stood on neutral grounds. There are sites out there that target specific audience, alldeaf has sort of been like a wikipedia where everyone looks up for something about deafness or discusses about it.

Meanwhile, a hearing parent comes and needs help from anyone who knows about hearing loss because they don't know what to do with their child.
Naturally the topic is open for everyone to reply. Hearing, deaf, Deaf, HH, whatever can join and offer their opinions.

So, hearing makes an opinion that Deaf don't agree with. Deaf make an opinion that deaf don't agree with. Everyone argues over what the OP should do. Whose advice should OP take? It is controversial.

Maybe it would be better if the OP would post specifically from who they are looking for advice from. "I would like advice from signers only" or "I would like advice from anyone" etc. that would cause less frustration over a decision to do, but not everyone is going to think about posting this before they talk... :sadwave:

True but there's already an AO, same idea- just for very specific rants and questions or maybe things that hearies really don't need to see.
It be easier for group of like supporting like member of the group.

:naughty:

You and your story are one of the good things about this site. You did not show up and push your agenda on AD; you let AD educate you. Don't say you are not educated. Your story was one of getting information from people living with hearing loss. You were open to becoming educated, and you were educated. It makes all the difference. Hearing people that show up and tell us to find a new site do nothing but make me shudder that I share air with them. I mean, hello?

I'm on the fence. I can understand having your own special area where you can relax and vent about issues pertaining to your own kind without worry of outside/clueless opinion. But then you have to have some sort of "bouncer" at the door to turn away undesirables... and frankly, I had enough of that in junior and senior high.

Then you have to decide who gets let in, what criteria they need meet. Personally, I don't want to go back in time in the area of my life when I went through "What are you guys talking about? Can I play, too? Why not?".

At that point I'll take my ball and go home.
