i asked this elsewhere..

Curious, did they improve for CI that CI user can get test by MRI or still can't?

No, I am talking about a different kind of HA type that doesn't amplify sounds, but transfer sounds to brain stem via a type of wave. The kind that bypass the cochlear completely.

What would the people say if I want my hearing child to wear an implanted ASL chip or even just a type of ASL chip is like hearing aid (no need for surgery)? I knew they would criticized me because they think hearing people are superior to the deaf people.

van de graff in the ear canal..... excellent.

few months yeah.. but i'm just saying that there are people like that out there. Many of them.

I'm sure there are. It makes sense. The CI became too effective for them that it made a huge difference in their lives when it stopped working. If the CI truly sucked and didn't work at all, there wouldn't be people like that. That's why I'm saying people can't see CI as something to be totally dependent on, especially when there's an easy alternative solution.

I have days where I forgot to recharge my CI battery. When people come into my office to talk, I simply say "No CI today.". Then they act accordingly. My coworkers already know some signs. Plus we have an IM set in place for the whole office.

You cannot stop it... but, you can work to correct it.

I propose we fight fire with fire. They have their enormously expensive CI implant. We can offer the enormously expensive ASL implant. Assuming the cost of a CI is $50,000. We will charge $50,000 to implant a full and complete ASL language chip inside each child's brain. This will allow the child full and complete access to language and knowledge. Although the child will still need to learn English (just like with a CI), they will be 10 times further ahead in their education and be stronger, more confident individuals.

Then we will proclaim in all the countries newspapers that a miraculous new implant is available for the deaf children that will give them unprecedented access to language and knowledge. research will be done to "prove" our point, studies will be done to "show" success... We will also show how there is NO risk of meningitis, NO risk of death from surgery, NO risk of implant rejection, and NEVER any need for explanation.

The "ASL chip" is really an allegory for for the teaching of ASL.

We already have that costly "ASL chip":
full immersion ASL classroom environment = $75K a year
transportation to school for the deaf =$25K a year
bilingual communication for life = priceless.

There. I rest my case.

I picked up my "ASL chip" for free. I stole it when I learned ASL on sly in the oral school.

As a moderator and the other mods will attest to this. I am getting sick of people trolling and flaming and just getting away with it. There is no sense to sit here and WAIT for the moment you want to pounce on something. Let this be a warning to everyone.

Sigh. Okey-doke, Jiro, whatevah.

I've been wearing HAs for longer than you've been alive. I do have a wee bit of experience there knowing what hearing loss is like.

How old were you when you became deaf?

Question for everyone. Would it change anything if the CI surgery had no deaths, no infections, NOTHING at all? Perfect record. You'd be okay with it for little kids?

I never really was strongly against implantation in little children. I am more of "I prefer that they dont get implanted at such a young age, but not my business as these are not my children." The reason for this is because it is a battle I chose not to fight since it is already being done. So, no..it wouldnt make a difference for me. I am just uncomfortable with the idea of needing sugery for something that is not life-threatening and the CI surgery is that.

However, it is the view that comes with the CI that I am against...like you mentioned before about how people see the CI as a way to make deaf children more like hearing kids who dont need ASL, Deaf culture, or the Deaf community.

Age 31 when diagnosed, might have had some mild loss before that. Started wearing hearing aids at age 31.

Current loss is down around the 90 decibel range for most frequencies, around 50-ish for low frequency sounds.
