you're in right place!

no they shouldn't keep it to themselves but that didn't happen in here. the question is - should CI users (and parents of CI users) come here and hear what they want to hear and say what they want to say that offends deafies?

No, they shouldnt.

I don't get with "no offense but..." comment and yet... still continuing to offend others

i try not to say it because... it could be interpreted as everything else i say is an offensive statement.

Oh well more Alice in Deafland discussion. I am deaf but it seems isn't real because I don't subscribe to the ideology of my deafness as a "cultural construct" self defied by persons who ARE NOT ACTUALLY DEAF. Correct Jillio & PFH? I have mentioned before -here-I knew I would become bilateral deaf-SILENCE-since Feb/92. It happened on December 20. 2006. That is why I actually previously attempted to learn ASL. Extremely difficult without a great deal of continuous practice.I also know CHS/Toronto does have ASL classes but took SpeechReading instead. That is why I stopped the futile exercise. Within my extended social circle-still don't know any deaf persons using ASL-today! Pace JennyB/Mrs Buckett who live in Toronto.
I have also mentioned reading an "interesting screed" called A journey into the DEAF-WORLD Harlan Lane ( Hearing person!),Robert Hoffmeister& Bob Bahan. In chapter 14 they detail the secret agenda of the Hearing-eradicating the DEAF_WORLD! shocking what ENT doctors are up to! Gee: should I check out whether a trip to Mars is necessary to escape the clutches of ENT doctors? It is in Toronto Public library 305.90816 LAN
Previously asked if either Jillio or PFH accept this as the current situation? Still waiting.
Enough for the moment and perhaps Alice In Deafland will retire tonight! Hope springs eternal. Happy New Years

No Deaf Culture mentioned. No deaf with upper case D. How was I to know???

Also, I only found out about the late-deafened thread because it was mentioned in this forum. I didn't go to the Our World, Our Culture because I was only interested in the HEARING AIDS and COCLEAR IMPLANTS forum being a hearing aid wearer.

Mods, you should consider changing the above quote on the home page to better reflect who this site is for.

Is that acceptable to tell us that we are limited because we are deaf, that ASL harms children's abilitiy to master English, and etc? Is that ok for us to accept those kinds of views and not speak up?

I am going to point this out just once.

In the first bold statement up above - You don't like it when a hearing person tells you something.

In the second bold statement - You spew the name Harlan Lane like a gospel. Harlan's a hearing person as well.

So what is it now? You dont like it when a hearing person tells you what it is, or like it?

Might want to work on your thinking a bit there, buddy.

no to all of your questions.

You seriously need to take Anthropology 101, and pay attention to the case study where they bring up the effects of isolations on languages and cultural customs in Papua New Guinea.

I've seen a separate hearing aid forum. But I'm not here to learn about hearing aids and I know very little about them (~5 months worth with one brand) that I could share.

I'm here because I'm raising a deaf child who is bilingual in ASL and English, bicultural in a Deaf and an integrated community, and is learning in a very new and unprecedented environment. I want us as a family (because at 4, she's not getting the car keys and I don't want her Deafness to be an isolated experience) to be exposed to all aspects of the deaf community, both local (in real life) and global (online and via conferences, symposia, etc.). If I want input from or to interact with those who use CIs alone, I would go to one of the 4-5 CI forums I participate in. If I want to engage with deaf, regardless of technology, it seems that alldeaf would be a good place to be, and a great place to find others who are choosing a bilingual route.

Do you think that families of deaf children with CIs, and therefore deaf children themselves (since Li's not allowed to be online on her own yet) should keep to themselves and not be welcomed as participants in the deaf community?

Me? No , I know people with CI. I allowed my children to be friends with CI kids.

:lol:But I think I must have misunderstood your post I responded to.

No, what I was pointing out is that I, and perhaps others, mistook who this forum is for. As mentioned in a previous post, this forum is for the Deaf Culture. I have no problem with that. I probably would not have joined had I'd known this as I am not a member of the Deaf Culture.

I agree that some here are insulting to the Deaf.

Understanding where each of us is "coming from" is important and I feel that some of the Deaf are as non-understanding of the late-deafened as some of the late-deafened are of the Deaf.

I hope that I have not insulted anyone in any of my posts. If I have, I'm truly sorry.

That's a good point. None of us should be saying things that offend each other. In practice, that's kind of hard, though -- we don't always know what's going to hit an individual sore spot. And when it comes to culture clashes, there's a lot of sensitivity between Deaf and not-Deaf -- 4 years into the journey and I'm learning every day with the help of the Deaf in my life. Some people don't have that privilege and could use a little gentle guidance, rather than condescension and mocking, from the people they encounter online. And sometimes, it's not a Deaf vs. deaf situation: Deaf aren't all that homogeneous and a culture doesn't all think with one mind, sometimes one person's beliefs may offend another, and yet both may be valid and acceptable within a culture.

Tell me - Do you fully endorse Zebadee's behavior?

I know you're asking GrendelQ this, but no, I think he was waaaay overboard (right word?). Though he thinks he's a mature 18 year old, he needs to learn some social skills.

;) Many others have stated the same. Was wondering about Grendel's response though.

I think he needs his mouth washed out with soap. Figuratively speaking.

You havent said anything degrading about Deaf culture, ASL or people who are deaf but some others have done that. What I am saying is that when newcomers come in here with some questions about CIs or whatever, which is fine but when they start saying degrading stereotypying comments about Deaf culture, ASL and etc and when people speak up, they get defensive and say that they are being attacked or being threatened. So, it is either we keep our mouths shut and let them make these kinds of comments or speak up against their kinds of views but risk getting acussed of driving them away with attacks. They need to take responsibility for their comments. So far, I havent seen that happen with most of them. A few, yes but most...nope.

You may or may not be referring to me in this post. But I did state that it was to CI patients. I never said that I was being attacked or threatened. I also stated that ASL wasn't a bad thing, it just didn't work for me in my particular situation.

You should know "learning social skills" can lead to drug use, alcohol consumption, and other illegal and troublesome things. All of which i refuse to participate in. If only you knew the people from my county you would know that i'm mature compared to them.
