If the surgery was for revenge it would mean removing the tumor after the patient died from cancer, and stomping on it. It would serve no purpose.

No, not for revenge. For self-defense. To let the attacker know that he can't do that kind of thing without expecting consequences.... its like when someone hits you, your gut reaction is to pull back and hit them back. Why? For revenge, to get even, to get back at them , to show them you cant hit me and just think i wont do anything.
