It seems that people are trying to label Kokonut simply because they dislike him and his politics. I'm not fond of his politics, either, but Kokonut isn't the issue here, folks. The issue is Roman Polanski and how he skirted justice on a rape charge.

This thread has gone about ten ways of wrong, and I've already stated how I feel about the subject, so I'm out.

no. this thread is about Whoopi Goldberg's whacked opinion in Polanski's crime. Polanski subject is in other thread.

For recognizing the facts.

The issue is also about Polanski and how he skirted the law to avoid jail time for rape, an issue that Whoopi saw saying it wasn't rape. It does go back to Polanski included as part of this topic of discussion.

The 13 year old victim in this situation has grown up and she has stated to authorities she has moved on. Why haven't some people moved on to healthier fixations?

It'd do your mind and body well to focus on much more positive news, just my imho.

Exactly. And she has stated publicly that she does not want Polanski prosecuted.

This particular article provided the OP with the opportunity to accomplish 2 things at once: slam a black woman and appear to be concerned over women's rights. He couldn't pass it up...it's like winning the trifecta for him.

so do rest of average people and politicians.

Exactly. Situations like this occur all the time in every day life. We only hear about the famous ones. This situation is not peculiar to Hollywood.

Minimizing the issue of rape is a sign of irresponsibility and apathy.

The defenders of film director Roman Polanski - charged with raping a 13-year-old girl in 1977 and then fleeing the country - are starting down a slippery slope by trying to redefine what rape is.

"It wasn't rape-rape," comedian and talk-show host Whoopi Goldberg said on The View on Sept. 29. The next day, Debra Tate, sister of Polanski's murdered wife, Sharon, said on the Today show that "There's rape, and then there's rape," arguing that it was consensual sex even though the victim was 13.

"There are really two perspectives here," says Shannon Gilreath, Wake Forest University Law Professor for Interdisciplinary Study and a nationally recognized scholar on issues of equality, sexual minorities, and constitutional interpretation. "One is the perspective of people who look for any reason imaginable to excuse the victimization of women and girls that is rampant: it happened long ago, she was mature for her age--she wanted it. On the other side of this are those of us who are saying that every victim matters, even those victimized by people rich enough to evade jurisdiction for many years." But Gilreath says under the law, statutory rape is a clear offense, and at 13 years old, the girl was underage.

Many in the entertainment industry have flocked to Polanski's defense, questioning whether the act was strictly rape or not and pointing to the amount of time that has passed since the case, possible judicial misconduct, and the fact that the girl, now in her forties, would prefer that the case simply go away.

But where is the outrage in the media and entertainment industry for the victim, asks Gilreath.

"Maybe the missing piece of this discussion is that what is being turned into a major media event, full of talking-head outrage because it involves Roman Polanski, is real life as it is experienced by millions of women every day. And, like it or not, it could happen to every woman. Until we face up to the pervasiveness of a culture of violence that sexualizes dominance, that turns male dominance over women into sex, then we won't be able to face it down. And women and girls will continue to be raped and worse unnoticed. Where is the outrage, where is the media blitz about that?"
When Is Rape Not Rape?

Let's not minimize rape. It's not funny.

Chris Rock, comedian, recognized what rape is in the Polanski's case.

"People are defending Roman Polanski because he made some good movies? Are you kidding me?"

"C'mon, man! She's 13! I've seen some hot 16-year-olds that look 18, 17 that look 18. Thirteen is 13! No one gets away with having sex with a 13-year-old," Rock said.
"Rape. It's rape! Rape is No. 2. It's murder, then rape," the comedian continued. "It's No. 2. Like the United States, we want to capture Osama bin Laden and murder him. We're not going to rape him. That would be barbaric."

Rock is among only a few celebrities who have criticized the swell of support behind Polanski, 76. Jewel and The View's Sherri Shepherd both voiced their disapproval on Twitter.

It's funny how people try to lump all the celebrities and such into one category, Hollywood. It's just as bad as people saying that deaf people are bad tippers.

People can be really petty sometimes.

Relying on stereotypes and trying to categorize based on a single characteristic is much easier than actually thinking.:P

:giggle:

And notice how he likes to lump Hollywood with liberal politics.

What in the hell is "did not 'rape' rape her"???

'Rape' IS rape! It is still rape.

Just like people using date rape drug on their victims. They were raped.

I have to agree that Woopie made an ignorant statement.

Minamizing rape! That is what they are doing.

I truly feel sorry for the victim in this.

Kokonut cared more about one woman's rights. The woman who had a baby born too young to recieve help and nobody else would believe that the doctor couldn't even be bothered to look into it.

Where was that woman's rights? Where were the rights of her child?

That was no more than a facade to promote a personal political agenda.

I don't know the actual story about Roman but let's say that he did commit rape that happened 30 years ago. He broke the law. He harmed a minor with drugs and he fled. So, no matter how successful he is with movies, he should be held accountable for his wrongdoings.

The fact that the victim forgave him doesn't make it less wrong. It's still wrong.

I am curious why race is even an issue.. Roman is white, right?

Mr. Polanski fled the country after a admitted guilty plea of the rape of a 13 year old girl.

If in court it was found that the perpetrator gave er drugs as a way to control the child victim, took nude photos of the child for his later pleasures, and proceeded to forcefully rape the victim vaginally and anally, per the childs Grand Jury testimony.

There are 36 pages of court papers containing the victim's testimony.

Don't mince words or change the subject. Rape is rape.

They will only prosecute him for failing to appear before court, which what the original warrant was for. Why would they go through the whole trial again if he already pleaded guilty? The victim already stated she didn't want to go through the whole thing again.

His arrest not even about rape. It's about not accepting responsibility for what he did-- by fleeing country after he pleaded guilty.

They can't try him again. Double jepardy. You are correct. This was a bench warrant for failure to appear for sentencing.

Right. And at the same time he will not have to goto trial since he plead guilty already. They will get him for his bench warrent and hold him until sentencing for the original crime that he plead to.

Roman is white. The title of the topic is about Whoopi Goldberg. She is not white. That is where the race comments are based. People have speculated, given the flavor of the OP's writings, that he might have racist tendencies. I refuse to speculate on such matters.

A lot of your opinions are out there, but you still have the freedom to express them.

kokonut...

You're already blue. Stop for a minute... we need you alive. Oh wait.. scratch that.

But seriously... it gets tiring when people argue until their faces are blue.
