What Induces Fear?

Thanks for all the suggestions, Hear Again. I will definitely ask my psychiatrist for a letter! And I also think online courses would be great. I could focus on learning and not trying not to be triggered!

I hope that your university takes your bipolar well. People can be ignorant about mental illness as you know, and I just hope you don't end up on the receiving end of that ignorance.

fortunately, i know several students who receive accommodations for their depression and they haven't experienced any ignorance as a result.

the way my university handles accommodations is to keep a letter of diagnosis on file from a student's psychiatrist, therapist and/or doctor and indicate the accommodations that are needed on a special form.

in no way does a professor know why a student is receiving certain accommodations.

for example, if i need extended time to hand in assignments due to my manic or depressive episodes, that will be listed on the accommodations form, but it will not indicate why (i.e. that i'm bipolar).

if a professor at any time wants to know why a student is receiving certain accommodations, they can always contact the disability office who will tell them that he or she has a documented disability.

in no way do they disclose the fact that a student has a mental illness, other condition or a physical disability.

Oh that is excellent! I didn't realize they were that respectful of your privacy. My high school was... definitely not like that. In that case I will definitely go through with it. I was worried about that but I'm glad I don't have to be. Thanks so much, Hear Again.

you're welcome! <smile> yes, most universities and colleges are good about protecting a student's privacy. my university disability office will only tell a professor that a student has a documented disability, but will not indicate what it is. i had the same concerns too. i only found out recently what would happen if i asked for accommodations for my bipolar and was assured that my professors would never know that i had the illness. not that i'm ashamed (because i'm not), but you know how stigma can be.

Correct. The only person that can disclose the exact nature of a disability is the student themself.

Excellent. And that would be too personal for me to disclose to a professor. So I'm glad that the disability office can't.

Same here. Large crowds induce panic attacks for me.

large crowds cause manic episodes for me. (also, when i'm manic, sounds are much louder than usual which only adds to my anxiety and mania.)

That's why I hate most public places.

i hate all public places, but since i have no choice but to go by myself if i want to run errands or buy groceries (if my sister can't drive me), i have to do the best i can.
