What are you thinking about? Part VIII

Is it my age or me growing up in Germany... I do not recall letters in phone numbers, how did that work and when was it?
At our house, we had a party line and letters in our phone number until the mid-1960's.

Ah, so is this why there are letters on the phone?
Well, until T-9 texting came about. :)
The letters were also popular for remembering phone numbers. Ex: 1-877-SKIP-I-95 is the phone # for Amtrak's Auto Train reservations.

That is what I thought they were there for, but oddly never looked into it...

Thought of a few additional things.

We were one of the few families of the kids I knew and played with that had a private line rather than a party line. My dad sold cars and people wanted to talk about that when they were off so he got a lot of calls at home and couldn't afford to have others tying up the line.

The number on the vehicle license plates at the dealership where Dad worked was the same four numbers as the numbers in their phone number (Phone number ended in 1682 and that was also the number on their license plates with each plate ending in a different letter). I don't know how far back it goes but it remained popular for individuals as well until the real personalized car plates became available. In Illinois there was a time when we could request just numbers not complete words. So . . . it was common to use the same numbers as the last 4 numbers of your phone number but starting with your initials.

A trick involving long distance when a family member was gone was for them to make a "person to person" call. That only incurred charges once the person called by name answered. If everything was fine that person was never there. If something important had come up the call was excepted.

Reminds me of collect calls and sending messages through them

I'm not going to get many bikes sold if I don't feel wanted. If someone wants to see me get a lot of bikes sold, they better make me feel wanted!!!

Yikes... time to step back a bit there. But if you move to Texas I know somebody who just may be your match-... right down to the attitude. I've seen it all...male and female versions... but seriously dude... take a step back and go do something fun for a change.

Sounds like "Doctor, heal thyself". Seems the ones who should know how to heal oneself are the least likely to do it. :(

sadly yes. I know someone who is a school psychologist but doesn't always practice what she preaches, denies issues or problems that are kind of obvious(well.. to a few of us...). I guess for many people it's HARD to look at themselves and admit they need work.

Yup- Even though eventually their numbers got converted to numbers, my family still used the two letter phone numbers almost all the way through the 80s lol. For the grandparents it was MA (MAdison... I have no idea why or why I remember that....).

re the license plates with the last 4 digits of phone numbers.. hm will have to ask the 3 family members who were teens in the 50s and twentysomethings in the 60s...

Thinking about?...stewing about?...Just heard of a government program that pays your rent and Electricity bills for 2 years!....move you into an apartment, anywhere in the City....For homeless people (I believe)... A Lady (in her early 40's), got an apartment very close by me. She was outside by the pool yesterday, drinking a beer and smoking a cigarette....hmmmm...must be nice that she can afford to buy Beer and Ciggies and get her rent and electric FREE...I haven't really talked with her yet, but she did wave....She does look healthy...(but one never knows)...Maybe a nice little "talk" will settle my curiousty... (not being too nosey)...But....

Thinking that my road trip is complete and success. 4905 miles road trip in 2 weeks to Michigan and back. Had to sort through my late grandparent's things and bring some home. Tomorrow and this weekend will unload the suv and sort through the things. I have several carousel slide photos from the 1960-70's era... talk about family memories. I have in possession of about 7 ft tall grandfather's clock I brought home from Michigan.

Welcome back!

That's a lot of miles.

TCS had to make a similar road trip from SC to MI last summer when his mom died. His mom was a hoarder, so there was lots of sorting to do. TCS also had to conduct his mom's funeral.

Wow, that clock will be a real family treasure for your home. :)

Welcome back. Now you need a vacation from your "vacation". ;)

I'm wondering if my hearing aids will make it hard for me to find a job. I have only a mild hearing loss, but some might see the aids and think otherwise.

Calvin could you post a photo

I don't think it should matter as not unless you're going to be working in a very noisy environment and need to hear to move out of harms way really fast.
