What are you thinking about? Part IV

The trains were not on time when I rode Amtrak years ago. They were hours late.
I realize that. When we get to Chicago, I'll inquire as to the anticipated arrival of the train I'll be taking out of Chicago to see if we'll have time (of course, that also depends on how late our train is in getting into Chicago).

I didn't commute far...I worked on the 2nd floor and lived on the 3rd floor. :)

There simply were not a lot of options that would meet the criteria of my major, so there was not a lot to pick and choose from.

Experience is a commodity. Would you have been hired in your current position with no experience?

I got all my experiences from paid positions. My first work experience was from job that didn't pay much but I still got paid for it. It doesn't have to be $$$. I can do bartering but free? :nono:

"Unpaid Work" is just against my belief.

Some unpaid internships usually lead to a full time permanent position so it can be seen as a positive experience. Don't be too full of yourself. Some companies really can't afford hiring someone new in this economy.
What's up with that? Explain.

Speaking of that, I heard back from Smithsonian today and they're holding their breath until their 2012 budget comes out so it looks like I'll have to wait a while and see if they can afford hiring me. Even I'd work at Smithsonian for free, it'd look great on my resume and it'd be an amazing networking opportunity.
Then go for it.

I don't see how Smithsonian or anyone can't afford to even pay minimum wage but hey - you wanna do it for free? go ahead. I wouldn't.

You want me to explain? You make awfully a lot of pretentious comments, acting as if the world revolves around you. That people should bow and kiss your prim toenails. Trying to make them emulate you.

People can't always get what they want. I'd LOVE a 100k a year salary, but that is completely unrealistic at this point of my life. I can't get what I want so I have to start at the bottom and climb my way up even if it means having to get an unpaid internship at an amazing organization. Even Smithsonian have budget issues, don't assume that it's a wealthy company that can afford hiring people left and right. HR went out of his way to make an additional for me, but it depends on their budget and he knows that I'm well worth more than minimum wage. So I have to wait and see.

Does that mean thewritealex is as pretentious as me since we both agree on this issue?

Perhaps you shouldn't make a lot of assumptions because you are way off the base and you are getting personal in here and I know why. or perhaps you are misplacing your frustration on me because of your unemployment & financial situation.

Reread my post very carefully -
sorry but I don't believe in unpaid job position. or even internship. I've never worked for free. "Unpaid Internship/Work" should be outlawed especially for organization/company that has profits. For non-profit organization that is mostly volunteer, I'm for it.

oh my! you're well worth more than minimum wage? And that's not being "pretentious"?

Comical. Next time when you reply to me - keep it clean. :ty: My patience is wearing thin and I will report your post. This childish farce of yours is tiresome.

Listen. TWA is not pretentious at all and I don't consider him to be one. I understand where you guys are coming from. Working at a well reputable company for free is ridiculous for me as well, but there are situations where I would just for networking opportunity and a great experience on my resume especially if it leads to my dream career.

I'm not taking anything out on you and don't see myself to be doing so. I'm merely sharing my opinion and participating in the discussion, but I seem unable to do so because of how you share your opinions, making me feel like a piece of shit because that's what you do.

And I KNOW myself that I'm worth more than minimum wage. I have a college degree after all. Even you would say the same for yourself. Doesn't mean that I'm pretentious. Not minding to have an unpaid internship that leads to my dream career doesn't make me pretentious either.

Sometimes you just have to keep trying in order to achieve your long term goal. I'm sorry my life doesn't work out easily just like yours. I'm sorry that we see things differently. Now how many times have I told you to leave things alone? Leave it alone. Maybe I'll never be able to "emulate" you. Maybe you should learn how to "emulate" me this time.

Good for you. :applause:

Not everyone has similar opportunities and situations that you have.

Thinking about today's classes (2nd to last day of classes this semester, the end is soooo near). And also about how good it makes me feel when one of my professors asks me for permission to use my coursework as examples for their future students... It means I didn't bust my ass for nothing :D

If you learned something doing your assignments, you didn't bust your ass for nothing. You gained what education is intended to impart...knowlege.:cool2: The rest is nothing more than a compliment. The knowlege is the valuable result.

I am thinking , what is wrong with people when they don't reply to your messages? I am thinking, that I am not the:eek3: only one , a friend of mine emailed someone and they didn't reply back either.

Yeah, the Smithsonian definitely isn't exactly made of money. It's federally funded, and the Smithsonian Institution itself says that the federal money only covers 70 cents of each dollar they need to keep running everything. They're feeling the crunch just like the rest of us are.

huh? My previous post -

Then go for it.

I don't see how Smithsonian or anyone can't afford to even pay minimum wage but hey - you wanna do it for free? go ahead. I wouldn't.

As I said - Go for it. Apply for it. Good Luck!

btw - I never got it easy in life. If I were having it easy, then why am I not relaxing on my hammock in Caribbean Island for life? But nooo I didn't because I finished college at accelerated path and while doing that, I had part-time job which means I leave for work at 7am and get home at 10pm from evening classes. Doing this for a couple years was of a great difficulty for me because I had to study and do projects for school and I also had freelance works for extra income which means I slept average about 3-4 hrs a day and commute 3 hrs a day. I did all this for a few years... and managed to graduate with 3.4 in-major GPA plus Dean's List.

So I don't know where you get that idea that I had it easy in life. The difference between you and me is that I make a hard choice and I stick with it while adhering to my belief. I simply don't believe in free work without any kind of compensation (it doesn't have to be a monetary type). that's all. and that is my belief and so far, I'm doing just fine. so can you but it's your choice.

You lamenting on "I have a college degree!" excuse is tiresome and it's not going to get you anywhere. I've never complained about meager pay I received when I was in college and even after I graduated. That is also another difference between you and me. I don't wallow on it. I suck it up and move on.

Oh, I know. I definitely have learned a LOT from just one year in grad school, and no matter where I go or what happens in the future, no one can take that knowledge away from me now.

But one of my professors is a fan of giving out homework that's really more like busywork, and he's very very very nitpicky, so I'm glad when my work actually meets his (imho kind of ridiculous) standards. :D

It is possible they didn't receive the message, and it is possible you didn't receive their response. Messaging and email are not 100% foolproof.

Agreed. And sometimes it's just that the person is bad about replying. I can't tell you how many times I've read a text message or e-mail and mentally told myself to reply back later, but end up forgetting completely.

When the tables are turned... I generally send an email, and if they haven't replied in 24 hours, I'll send another gentle reminder or resend the message. For text messages, I'll wait a few hours, maybe half a day, if it's not time-sensitive.

Here's a good advice.

Just shut your mouth especially when you don't know what is going on with me. TWA knows me the best and I'd rather him judge me than you.

And yes, you still got it easy compared to me. I've been working extremely hard to get somewhere I want to be and I don't exactly see myself wallowing. I'm just frustrated that you keep putting me down in every comment of yours. You're not pushing me to get far in my life, you're pushing to make me deplore you even more.

Unpaid internships being good in some situations was my point. Telling me to go for it, maybe I will. But I didn't need to hear from you about how bad it is entirely and how you're too good for it.

Good for you. :applause:

of course not - nobody does unless there's alternate universe

The only difference between each other is one's persistance and keen decision process.

Post reported.

Good for you. At least I speak my mind. <3

Best left in PM or IM. And I've never said how bad it is or how I'm too good for it. I've worked for low pay in case you missed that part. I only said that I refused to work for free especially from a company/organization that has profits because that's cheap greed on their part. unethical as well.

And I've said "go for it" to you <3

I like this. it's a good penny for thought

I'm not popular, but I have good friends. I'm not rich, but I have what I need. I may not be liked, but I know I'm loved. That's the most important thing.. ♥
