Terrorist attack foiled aboard U.S. jetliner

This thread wonders me, if you, kokonut had the similar experience if this dude was on the plane, and you were the passenger, how can you react it?

having a panic attack? :hmm:

nasty underwear bomb. I seriously doubt the plane would be downed if the plot was successful due to several variables -

1. the cabin was already decompressed as the plane was landing thus reducing the damage by PETN
2. several obstacles including Mutlabb and chairs w/ passengers serve as bomb blast to reduce the explosive strength
3. the plane is designed to withstand the damage to certain extent

let us wait for forensic scientists and investigators conclude their investigations.

Dude, if that guy was within my range of reach I'd be on him like white on rice. Either you die trying or you will die for not doing anything. I like the odds better to actually try and stop the guy from going any further and save my life and the rest of the passengers than to stand idly by screaming my head off.

despite of security requirement to remain seated one hour prior to landing?

I don't confuse myself knowing the difference between saving my own life (and others in the process) versus sitting there afraid of some regulation when the opportunity arises to do so.

ah so then sounds like people are not having doubts about what to do despite of extra security measure. good to know that some passengers have common sense and will die trying like Flight 93.

Know the difference that different people do react differently in different situations, especially in extremely stressful situations. If there is a potential for additional confusion or doubt such as more regulations can cause a person to hesitate rather than react decisively.

I think I'll leave the explanation to somebody with.... psychology training but the fact still remains - 3 flights have been averted by the passengers. 2 were successfully averted thus - ZERO terrorist attack on American soil so far..... however - Flight 93 was tragically perished but they will be remembered for saving White House.

People are not confused. People do not have doubt. despite of extra security measure. Their survival instinct will take over.

Basic psychology covers the "flight" or "fight" response. It's a fact that people respond differently to a variety of stimuli, especially sudden and stressful situations. This is covered extensively (and is required) in my years of forest fire fighting training in regard to various real-life situations and scenarios, including fire entrapment and such. Either a person becomes frozen with fear or they do something about it as an act of self-preservation (or for the preservation of others such as saving your daughter's life for your own).

right. hence you just proved my post all long. Your post is a contradiction to your posts in TSA thread though. not surprising.

You need to explain the contradiction. It's a basic psychological fact that humans respond differently to sudden and stressful situations.

hence nothing to worry about people having doubts whether or not to help try defuse the situation.

First, not too long ago, you had time restriction on restroom use on the plane. Now, you cannot have devices or any materials on your lap prior to landing, even a simple book. You cannot get up 1 hour before landing.

People do odd things when there are doubts on what to do when you get more and more regulations heaped upon them.

a simple book :bsflag:

give me the source to prove it, I thought it would have been only electronics that bans in the last hour, no?

All you had to do was look it up. The new rules came out just recently. I heard it on my radio on my way to work. Look it up yourself next time.

For all U.S.-bound aircraft originating in a foreign country (this also includes Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands):

•Passengers will not be able to leave their seat approximately one hour prior to landing.
•There will be no PA announcements regarding the position of the aircraft or landing announcements.
And remember your one carry-on item allowed? You cannot access it during the one-hour period prior to landing. This also includes magazines, newspapers, books and personal electronic devices during the one hour pre-landing period.
•All pillows and blankets will be collected one hour prior to landing. Flight crews are being told to stow the blankets and pillows in the galleys and not in the overhead compartments.
•All on board IFE (in-flight entertainment) systems will be disabled (these are the systems that usually show the electronic map on the screens and the aircraft position).
The Travel Detective on New TSA Regulations | Peter Greenberg Worldwide

Arriving from a flight from Amsterdam, Netherlands, passengers said they were prohibited from having anything on their laps or being able to use the restrooms in the hour before the plane landed. "There was extra security, that's for sure. We had officers questioning everyone," said Ban Aziz, a native of England who came to town to visit her sister in West Bloomfield. "Some people weren't happy about it, but I felt they were doing their job."

Added Aziz's 14-year-old daughter, Tara: "We had to stow everything -- pillows, blankets, even the headphones -- under the seat. A girl in front of me was reading a book, and they even made her put that away."

Use your imagination when it comes to uncertainty that is compounded with sudden stressful moments.

I'm very curious to know what your imagination is when it comes to that sudden stressful moments.

My fire fighting crew I was with in 2007 at the Tripod Complex fire were was faced a real situation of fire entrapment but because of our training and an excellent crew boss we were able to quickly extricate ourselves from an extremely dangerous situation. We literally had a minute or two to spare before showers of embers came down prior to a wall of fire erupting into a blowup. It was actually blowing up behind our backs as we got the heck out. I documented all this with pictures and narrative in my blog. We got out fast and soon boarded our crew bus not wasting time to put our tools in the cache area underneath the bus before taking off into an already blackened "safe zone" There was another but different crew we spotted on our way out on foot and they were in a panicky run due to their inexperience and/or probably due to a green or poor crew boss. Until you actually been in such a dangerous situation you don't know how you'll react, but training kicked in along with an experienced crew boss saved our butts that day.
