Questions and debates about blindness:

That's true. But at least it's not so bad. I'm not getting bruises and cuts anymore. <sigh of relief>

my experiences at university have been very positive. i'm the only totally deafblind student on a campus of 30,000 students and have been treated quite well. the only exception is when i attend a lunch event for deaf signers because they always ignore me and never want to do tactile sign with me. even when my captionist tried introducing me to them, no one said hello.

<sad> That's so rude. I'm sorry to hear that.

I'm sorry Hear Again, that sucks. Those people are rude...

yeah. i felt like swearing in sign at all of them, but bit my tongue and left in disgust instead. funny how they treated me that way, but my local deaf community doesn't. neither does the deafblind community.

i hate to say it, but hearing-sighted students treat me better than those who attend the deaf signers lunch group.

That's interesting, Hear Again. I wonder why that is.

I get more or less the same treatment from hearing and Deaf alike. It really depends on the individual.

i hate the deaf signers in the lunch group at my university. all they care about is themselves. they don't care about communicating with the deafblind.

I'm sorry, Hear Again. <sad> If they don't care enough to try to communicate with you, then they don't deserve your friendship.

i just don't understand why it's so hard to even say "hello" even if it's through another terp. that isn't so difficult to do, is it? i think not.

I agree, but it involves thinking about the other person. You said this group only things about themselves so it follows they're too lazy to even say "hello."

Again, they're really not worth your friendship.

I would happily tactile sign with you any day, directly or through an interpreter.

Is there another Deaf community in your area you can get in touch with? Maybe you can try to find some other Deaf folks that would hopefully be more considerate than this group you're talking about.

Or some blind hearing people that know sign language?
