Questions and debates about blindness:

Is there another Deaf community in your area you can get in touch with? Maybe you can try to find some other Deaf folks that would hopefully be more considerate than this group you're talking about.

there's a local deaf community i participate in within the greater metro area. they're wonderful and have accepted me ever since 1995 after i lost my hearing.

I'm glad to hear that, Hear Again. It sounds like those folks have a better idea of the meaning of friendship.

my experiences at university have been very positive. i'm the only totally deafblind student on a campus of 30,000 students and have been treated quite well. the only exception is when i attend a lunch event for deaf signers because they always ignore me and never want to do tactile sign with me. even when my captionist tried introducing me to them, no one said hello.

That's sad. When I went to Uni they have a deaf resource room. I was hoping to meet other deaf but I wasn't even helped by the deaf resource unit. Since I was b legally blind I was helped by the disabled resource room. Even though I thought communication was my major problem rather then being legally blind.

I'm sorry to hear you, Typing, and Nika all got bullied at school. I can DEFINATELY relate to that.

I'm sorry. Yeah, grade school was evil.

i also hated elementary school. middle school was better, but not by much. high school was awesome and i would do anything to be able to live those days all over again.

They all sucked for me.

i'm sorry to hear that. i think what helped make my high school experience so positive was my being able to participate in forensics (speech club), debate, the school newspaper, advanced choir, band and homecoming. i met alot of great friends through extra-curricular activities, but at the same time, there were also alot of people i knew in elementary and middle school. this was a suburban community, so 95% of the student body knew each other from attending similar schools in kindergarten-8th grade.

Thats cool, In middle school for a few years we lived in the country, i knew a few people, and the services were much better there, kids weren't just grasping to be my frienc, but at least they weren't mean. . I didnt have the time or energy to be in clubs in high school, I had a really hard time just finishing the reading for my classes *because of my blindness and nystagmus* I was up till 12 every night doing that.

That's interesting. I had the oposite experience as far as bullying was concerned. The first high school I went to was in the countryside. My parents chose it because they thought that It would be good for me. The bullying got so bad there that I had to leave.

Then I went to a city school with a PHU. There was still bullying but it was quite minor compaired to Madely high school. I made friends with the other deaf and the PHU.

The only disadvantage was the lack of signing. I asumed that because it was for deaf people there would be signing. In fact it was harder at this school as the teachers didn't seem to write anything on the blackboard. It was all talk and I was suppose to take notes but I just couldn't do that. As I couldn't write and lipread at the same time.

I'm sorry, that stinks, i would have been mad. The only reason the small school was better was because i got to educate people, i gave lectures.

Any more questions?

Nope, none as of right now you guys have given me a good concept of the blindness world.

If anything, you guys are more than welcome to use this as a chat thread regarding general remarks associated with blind, medical discussion, feedback from others, etc. It doesn't have to be an answer a question only thread.

Thanks, Dreama, what is your cause of blindness again?

I don't think I remember giving any talks about being HOH. I went to Vegan camp last summer and gave talks there but I'm not sure they made any differance. It rained for vertually the whole holiday so their were very few people there.
