Questions and debates about blindness:

Things are looking good. Every Obama event I went to was totally ADA accessible. Wheelchair ramps, braille signs everywhere, interpreters present. <big smile>

go obama! smile.

wait. now i'm confused. does the ada specify whether a non-profit organization must have *more* than 12 employees or less? i always thought it was more because if it were less, then everyone would be expected to abide by the ada. i'm going to research this.

I have no idea. I was taking that from you. Either way, screen reader is only an option for me if there are multilingual multi-alphabetic screen readers on the market.

Oh no. My organization is non-profit with 12 or less employees.

My boss is very reasonable. She would definitely get me a screen reader if I asked. The problem is that I do translation from and to English and Farsi. Farsi uses the Arabic alphabet (with four extra letters.) Are there any screen readers that read more than one language, including one whose script is right-to-left and omits vowels? I could technically do some English-only or Farsi-only work, but I am one of the few bilingual workers so my boss prefers to give me projects that require knowledge of both languages.

I lucked out today because
it was a coworker's birthday so at least the atmosphere was a bit more festive than usual. (Ironic for a human rights foundation. <laugh>)

I'm glad to hear that your day went ok.

to be honest, the only time my ci's bother me is when i'm manic (due to my bipolar). during these times all noises are amplified and sound as if they are twice as loud as they really are. when i'm manic, i can't stand wearing my ci's.

So does it help to take your CI's off then.

yes -- immensely. unfortunately though i can't do that when i have appointments to attend or errands to run, but if i'm at home, i definitely take my ci's off.

Why not? If you needed to do this I'm sure people would understand.

Well they all went to have a look at my CCTV? The teacher couldn't wait long enough for them to calm down and get on with their work.

Nika: you're right. It was discrimating.

LOL, sorry i didnt see your post earlier, kids did that with me, so finally the teacher took a day in all my classes for me to explain it to the class.

That must have been awkawrd. "Now class...." <all eyes on typeingtornado> "The TV like device that typeingtornado is using is called a CCTV..."

Whoah. Way too much spotlight. I'm glad my teachers never did that!

my teachers did and to be honest, i found it quite helpful. i did this primarily in elementary school where i demonstrated my perkins brailler, slate and stylus (ewww) and cane. i also let my classmates touch my braille books. they all learned alot from the experience even though there were a select few who continued to trip me in the hallway.

Hmmm... I guess it's cause I was unpopular. Every time my teacher explained something it just gave other kids more reasons to bully me/beat me up. I'm glad it wasn't awkward for you and typeing though. <smile>

Aww, i'm sorry people were mean to you, but i can totally relate, yes, in middle school i did the same thing, it helped a lot there at least *it was a tiny school* in high school it didnt matter how much i taught people about blindness they were brats *it didnt help that my stepsister was in my english class* I dont like to be in the spotlight either, and when i got put on the spot it was bad, but i dont mind informing a class about blindness, i also did it as part of ASL 1 in high school.

I'm not saying it wasn't awkward, for a long time i hated sighted people because of the way i was treated through school, and i still struggle with trusting people for that same reason.

I'm sorry to hear that. I know how bullying and teasing can mess with your trust. <sad>

I wouldn't have minded if people were genuinely interested and curious. But the thing is that when the teacher would explain, it would be like s/he's feeding them bait for them to tease me. Most of the kids in my school just took it as another weak point they could jab at. They knew the one way to get to me was to make fun of my medical problems. I tried to hide that their teasing got to me but when it was about medical stuff I just couldn't hide it.

Blah.

Well at least we're in college now where most people are more grown up and aren't just making fun of our accommodations.

I'm sorry you had a hard time.

I dont know, some people in college can really tick you off too...
