Questions and debates about blindness:

i hope so too. at the risk of making a political statement that others disagree with, i hope the obama administration will go back and expand our rights under the ada that were limited by former president george w. bush.

I agree, i am not going to get into politics but i hope the ADA gets a lot of attention.

okay, instead of complaining about sighted people, let's talk about some of the good things they have done. i'll start:

Your right. It's too easy to complain about people being overhelpful.

1. I've always got back safely from my shopping trips despite repeatedly getting lost. Thanks to the General public who have helped me on those occasions.

2. After a cabbie failed to show up for my vet apointment I took the bus. Hoping the vet surgury would still be open. Luckily a nice lady helped me off at the right stop and guided me to the vet. She even guided me back home. As my pet rat Ella needed to be Euthanised and I was really upset it was very lucky she did.

3. Last christmas I went to help fundraise for animal shelters. They have carol services and shaking tins. I was hoping Jilli would get it right this time as the route their is through a park and she likes parks but unfortunately this time she didn't get it right so someone had to help me find the way to where they were meeting.

Right, but sometimes my glaucoma headaches feel unbearable. I would rather give up the rest of my vision and become NLP than deal with that kind of pain all the time. Plus with glaucoma I will become NLP someday anyway.

I don't blame you. If I was just blind I'd want to remove both my eyes due to the pain. But since I'm profoundly deaf too and have quite a bit of useful vision in my right eye I'd rather not. As without that I'd be totally deafblind. So that's why I'd only want a prosphetic in my left eye but I haven't found anyone to agree to it yet. (sigh)

let's see (no pun intended) if i can think of the various categorizations for vision:

20/20 - normal vision
20/70 - visually impaired/low vision
20/200 - legally blind
cf - counts fingers
hm - hand motion
shadows - shadow perception
lp with shadows - light perception with shadows
lp with direction - light perception; able to tell direction of light
lp - light perception without light direction
nlp - no light perception; totally blind

I think I'd range from cf to lp.

dreama,

why are doctors refusing to give you a prothestic for your left eye?

my opthalmologist said i could have surgery for prothetics if i wanted to, but i declined because i didn't feel the need. my eyes are perfectly fine and do not cause me any pain except for when i have migraines.

so in other words, your vision fluctuates, dreama?

Yes, Depending on the lighting condition.

For me to see at my best the light has to be just right. Any darker and it would be too dark for me to see properly. Any lighter and I'd need to wear shades or cover my eyes completely.

Is this chart after....(what is the vision term for "amplification"?)

dreama,

why are doctors refusing to give you a prothestic for your left eye?

Probably because the cause of blindness doesn't have anything to do with the eye itself. At least as far as they know. As soon as I can get proper terps sorted out I'm going to have my sight checked again.

I think if you are totally blind people are ok about giving you prosphetics but If you have useful vision it's another matter entirely.

no offense, but that must be very difficult to deal with.

That's ok.

Don't you experience that with noise and your CI's? I mean when they are off you hear nothing, when they are on you usually hear something although not as much if they are malfuctioning?

I think it's similar with your hearing as it is with my sight?

I'm glad to have a bit of sight in my right eye. That does help. Even though my eyes hurt.

I mean, without my glasses my vision is worse than 20/200, but with them it is fine. I am asking if the chart is after contacts or glasses.

20/70 is with best correction
20/200 is with best correction
below 20/200 (cf, hm, shadows, lp with shadows, lp with direction, lp and nlp) are without correction since most legally blind people cannot see well enough to wear glasses.

to be honest, the only time my ci's bother me is when i'm manic (due to my bipolar). during these times all noises are amplified and sound as if they are twice as loud as they really are. when i'm manic, i can't stand wearing my ci's.

no -- not unless they have 12 or more employees. if i am wrong about that, i hope someone will correct me.

Oh no. My organization is non-profit with 12 or less employees.

My boss is very reasonable. She would definitely get me a screen reader if I asked. The problem is that I do translation from and to English and Farsi. Farsi uses the Arabic alphabet (with four extra letters.) Are there any screen readers that read more than one language, including one whose script is right-to-left and omits vowels? I could technically do some English-only or Farsi-only work, but I am one of the few bilingual workers so my boss prefers to give me projects that require knowledge of both languages.

I lucked out today because it was a coworker's birthday so at least the atmosphere was a bit more festive than usual. (Ironic for a human rights foundation. <laugh>)

wait. now i'm confused. does the ada specify whether a non-profit organization must have *more* than 12 employees or less? i always thought it was more because if it were less, then everyone would be expected to abide by the ada. i'm going to research this.

Things are looking good. Every Obama event I went to was totally ADA accessible. Wheelchair ramps, braille signs everywhere, interpreters present. <big smile>
