Questions and debates about blindness:

I turned 1 in November 1990 and turned 3 in November 1992.

they still have orphanages in the 90s? i thought orphanages were a thing of the past since the 1970s. even my own mother told me that if i had not been adopted by her and my father, i would have been placed in foster care instead.

Keep in mind this is the USSR/Russia. My orphanage is actually still up and running today. I am still in touch with the director and employees there. They actually have more orphanages in my region now. My orphanage was split into two, so that there are only about 70 kids per orphanage, whereas there were about 140 during my time.

if you don't mind my asking, when did you come to the u.s.?

sorry for the off-topic post. you can answer me in pm if you wish.

No worries, Hear Again. I understand.

I came over in May 1993. I don't mind answering these questions here, so long as other posters don't mind. I just don't want to answer any orphanage details in the public forum. If you have any questions on that front, feel free to PM me.

i understand nika. i'm not going to ask you any questions about your experiences in the ophanage. i was just curious what years you were there and i forgot about the fact that you were in russia at the time and not the u.s.

The answer: she doesn't and has no place telling you if you're using your cane properly.

Exactly, and this was after she asked me if i could move around the room with other people in it. *if i could not how did i get to her class* and i did, *without my cane because the room was too small and crammed* ohh there is a girl that is deaf, and she has an interpreter *exited* its cool, we always ended up partners.

<laughs> How do yodu move with other people in the room? Seriously? People sometimes. Sorry I can't help but laugh but people are everywhere. If blindness kept us from moving around with other people in the room, we would be capital-S Screwed.

That's really cool that you ended up partners. I find it kind of amusing how much my girlfriend and I confuse people. She's Deaf, I'm Blind. A lot of people think I'm the Deaf one and she's the Blind one since I use sign and she uses voice and sign.

It was funny, we have class in the black box theater *its really dark. i should use my cane..* so my signing was slow because i couldn't halfway see her, so the terp is like ok we dont have time for this and starts interpreting for me.

<laughs> I would have gotten such a kick out of saying something like that. "Man, your O&M teacher must have not known what they were talking about!"

yup, i know half of them in this area, and can get phone numbers easily. I should ask on tues. and yes we would be screwed if we could not move around.

Right. In my experience, people usually refer to squint (strabismus) as "lazy eye" (even though technically "lazy eye" is another condition) and nystagmus (eyes shaking back and forth or "dancing") as "crazy eyes." I say "wandering eyes" cause my eyes literally look like they're wandering. My left eye has a tendency to wander outwards and downwards a bit. (It also "twists" inwards but that's not visible to others.) And my right eye just wanders outwards a bit.

interesting medical terms for Lazy Eye and Crazy Eye. :ty:
