Questions and debates about blindness:

i also wanted to mention that i could have my eyelids sewn shut, but do not feel the need to do so. no one has ever commented on my eyes in a negative way, so i don't see any reason to have surgery.

omfg! don't do it! I just got the mental picture of eyelids being sewn shut from SAW movie.... <shiver>

interesting medical terms for Lazy Eye and Crazy Eye. :ty:

Actual Lazy Eye is known as amblyopia. It can be due to a significant difference in visual acuity (at least two lines on the E chart difference) or it can be due to a squint (strabismus.) That's probably why Lazy Eye is confused with Squint, because squint can be a reason for lazy eye, although lazy eye can also occur without a squint.

I have a tendency to close my eyes 95% especially in bright sunlight. However mine aren't naturally that way. In dimmer light my eyes are all the way open.

me too. I'm quite sensitive to bright color especially white at outside. the damn UV reflection.... the worst part is when lawn is covered with crystal white snow on sunny day. I had to squint all the way to the point where I had to close both of my eyes and then make a small squint with one of my eyes. I lost my sunglasses with prescription lens and it's a huge inconvenience to wear contact lens to wear non-prescription sunglasses. :mad2:

On my photophobic days I wear sunglasses outdoors and indoors. I squint my eyes outdoors and keep them open indoors. I finally got sunglasses with the darkest tint possible, which has helped. Although I would ideally like to get some glasses that only allow in 15% or even 2% for outdoors.

Yup, i just started wearing my prescription sunglasses to cut down on eye pain.

I have to go to work now. <sad> I'm on day three of this migraine. And at work I have to use magnification, screen reader isn't an option.

If you wear contact lenses then you can buy any kind of sunglasses. I had one pair of prescription sunglasses (years ago) and i lost them. :mad2: I actually prefer wearing contacts because glasses leave those unsightly marks on either side of your nose.

ouch..... hang in there...

nika,

can't you ask your employer to pay for a screen reader for you on the job? i would think that would be considered an accommodation under the ada -- especially if magnification is difficult for you to use.

that's the problem. ADA specified that the work must provide REASONABLE accommodation but the work does not have to provide best option available.

:mad2: not fair -- especially in nika's case since magnification can cause eyestrain and headaches when used for long periods of time.

I know. I'm hoping there's somebody who is well-versed with ADA law can add some input on this. :mad2:

i hope so too. at the risk of making a political statement that others disagree with, i hope the obama administration will go back and expand our rights under the ada that were limited by former president george w. bush.
