President Obama still smoking

Quibbling?

I said about the jar and hospital ward as a source of inspiration. They still have a choice, an informed one.

Yeah, right!! Like there is anyone in this day and time that isn't informed about the dangers of smoking. Again, you obviously know nothing about breaking an addiction.

Are you sure you're incapable?

I'm asking ya'all :)

Soda addiction? nada
Coffee addiction? nada
Smoking addiction? nada
etc addiction? nada

I've tried it all and nada. Blessed or cursed? :dunno: Maybe I'm a boring person

Have any experience in breaking any addictions? List them please if you do.

Did all of them contain high fructose corn syrup?

I know the mochas didn't have HFCS. What company did was sneaky... they deliberately chose an extremely bitter strain of coffee beans from Colombia that masked the sugar taste... and put in I believe about 35g worth of sugar into it? it didn't even TASTE sweet either.

Perhaps you simply don't have an addictive personality...some people are more pre-disposed than others to addictions. But don't get too comfortable. Anyone can fall victim to a physical addiction given the proper circumstances, addictive personality features or not.

physical addiction? example?

physical addiction? example?

For instance, let's say that in the future you suffer a disorder that requires you to take pain medication for an extended period of time just to be able to stay functional. You have as great a risk of suffering physical dependance (addiction) as anyone else. That is because the physical addiction is the work of the interaction of the body and the drug. It is separate from a psychological dependance.

Yep... happened to a friend. He was on an opioid... forgot the name of it to make his dialysis bearable. Was called "hillbilly heroin" for awhile; I think it was like $400 a pill if you were looking for it on the street? Then the doctors cut him off cold turkey. :\

Was kinda depressing to see him having to resort to pot and a few OTC medications (since he couldn't afford the street equilivant of the painkiller he was on.) Totally not impressed with the way his doctors didn't offer rehab or at least try to wean him off. :|

Most likely oxycontin.

Agreed. Pretty irresponsible of them not to take the measures necessary to break the physical addiction.

Correct. It is physical addiction. Chemical would refer to the substance addicted to, not the process of addiction itself. Different substances manifest addiction in different ways. For instance, an alcohol addiction is not the same as an opiod addiction. You need to know what the substance is to treat the addiction properly, and also to manage the withdrawal. Alcohol has the most dangerous withdrawal of all. But no matter the substance, it is still a physical phenomena.

Thanks. I knew what it was phonetically since it was the only time I have heard of it, but not when it was spelled out. Well, I COULD spell it out, but... for a deafie to do that? EPIC FAIL!

my brain will slowly comprehend it. the way I see it -

chemical addiction = smoking, drug, alcohol, etc.
physical addiction = fingernail biting

Physical-- usually because it messes with your brain or body chemistry (ie. alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, opioid) and your body carves it

Psychological (think jilio would call it a habit here)-- usually because it relieves some kind of stress (ie. fingernail biting, complosive hand-washing and so on)

Interesting question by PFH. I'd say the silence is rather interesting if not damning example of a hypocrite.

Nope. In order to have a physical addiction, you have to go through withdrawal symptoms when the substance is not ingested. Addiction is a biologic process. One can be addicted to any number of chemicals. It s all still addiction.

Fingernail biting is a stress relieving behavior. Not an addiction at all, but a habit. It is a learned behavior and it can also be unlearned by using alternative behaviors for relieving stress.
