President Obama still smoking

Congrats! I hope my hubby is successful. He has a dr's appt on Thursday to see what he can do to help him quit smoking.
Thanks Shel. I am happy too. It's the best thing that I can do for my health. I feel better. I wish your hub the best in quitting. You can help him quit by not nagging him so much.. Just kidding. Seriously all the best to him.

OK. Obama was 9 years old then.

I applaud you. :)
I started when I was 10 and thank you. He was 19 by the time the tobacco industry was made to admit the health risks. I am not sticking up for the guy. My view is that just because he smokes doesn't mean he can't be the president. As I posted earlier there have been many smoking presidents throughout history. I just know from first hand experience that it is not easy to quit.

He has tried quitting before and I made everything as stress-free for him. I think in his mind, his whole family..I mean everyone, cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, siblings, and parents all smoke and nobody got sick so he thinks he will get away scot-free. In their minds, they scoff at anyone who warns them of the dangers which is stupid of them. My hubby knows it is a nasty habit and really wants to quit but it doesnt help when his family mocks at him for trying to quit. It is sad.

While there are some people that smoke their entire life and don't have any problems they are the exceptions and are rare. Some people do use them as examples to not quit.

I didn't say that smoking meant he couldn't be President. It's just interesting that someone who grew up in an era when he knew the ill effects of smoking, enjoys playing basketball, and who is supposed to be über intelligent since his youth, would get hooked on smoking.

If you did it, he can, too. :) Let's hope that he does quit soon, and avoids the health problems associated with smoking.

No not you but others have implied it. I often think about youth smoking everyday when I drop my daughter off at high school. I see the kids smoking right on the school grounds and it drives me crazy. I wrote a letter to the school and have seen less since then so maybe I made a difference. One thing that I thought about was to make the cigarette companies slowly reduce the nicotine in cigarettes to wean everyone off them slowly and then stop production. I know it sounds crazy but they really should do something.

I don't know.....After my heart scare three weeks ago the Dr said no more caffine...I had a morining coffee place and a nightly coffee place.....To me it was a no brainer.

Ear Dr told me no more added salt 20+ years ago....that's how they treated Menieres......Haven't added salt once since then.

I guess we are not all as strong as you are. I have never heard of anyone being addicted to salt. Caffeine while having some addictive qualities is no where near as strong as nicotine in my experience. With cigarettes there is also a psychological addiction that has to be addressed as well.

I have seen people my age whom I would expect to be the last people I would think of get addicted to smoking. It is amazing how cigaretts draw people in.

My husband said the phychological part is the hardest because he has his daily habits with cigaretts, like his commute, for one.

I've been an off and on smoker for many years....I admit...I'm an addict. Been thru the patches and the gum and whatever else was available at the time....even quit "cold turkey" several times.....I broke out in hives and a very bad rash.....Was a "total bitch" without nicotine!

Kudos to those who can smoke an occasional cigarette/cigar without getting addicted, whether it's just to relax with a drink or for the hell of it!

Am I ashamed of my costly addiction? You bet I am...I buy the cheapest cigarettes I can find!...Even thought of rolling my own because it's a waste of good $$....I have altoids (breath mints) available at all times....

Just becuz Obama smokes an occasional cigarette, doesn't make him "unfit"!

I don't drink or do any drugs, I'm not addicted to chocolate or anything in regards....I just smoke a half-pack a day, and again, I will attempt to "quit"....would be the biggest achievement ever in my life!....Then again, if I fail...the saying goes...."if at first you don't succeed, try, try, try, try, try again"!

Salt is not an addiction.....food just tastes like crap without it.

Many would argue that caffine is just as addictive.......some people can't be tolerated unless they have there coffee.

I just don't get it.....there is not one thing I couldn't give up if it had the possibility of costing me time with my daughter or future grandchildren.

Some of sodium like MSG make you so more addicted to food like I did to Chinese food and some frozen dinners, however it is bad for people.

My grandpa tried to quit the smoking before I was born but failed so he still smoking until lung cancer started in 1994 then brain cancer in 1995 and died after that.

It would be depends on people, some people couldn't quit smoking at anytime, even I don't know about Obama is capable to quit smoking but he could try it so take more time to break the habit from smoking.

Let's see......it says right on the box that it will likely kill you.....yet he still smokes them. Not sure that is the kind of decision making we need from the "Leader of the free world"

Wow, he makes one poor lifestyle choice, and he's suddenly unfit for leadership. He's human, for Pete's sake. We all have our vices.

Good point. Caffeine addiction just isn't as stigmatized as nicotine addiction. Of course the fact that smoking also affects people in the smoker's vicinity adds to the stigma, but having too much caffeine, just like smoking, is bad for heart health too.

Didn't say he was unfit due to smoking .......Just noted it was poor decision making....Makes one wonder, if he won't listen to Drs about his own health what makes us think he will listen to advisers about the health of our nation????

No biggie though, the economy needs smokers right now. Can't afford to lose jobs in the tobacco industry.

If people want to smoke I couldn't care less, as long as it's not around me.

:hmm: Those are two really different situations. Listening to a doctor about your own health isn't really the same as listening to advisors about what's good for the country. A lot of people who care deeply for others tend to neglect themselves, so I don't think his smoking habit is indicative of his practices as president.

But some of your tax dollars go towards healthcare for smokers.

True......I do support a "sin tax" on cigarettes to offset the cost of this care. I mean it's their choice.....why should non smokers have to pay for the smoker's decisions
