'Open Carry' Law Contoversy: Gun Owner Cited

I'm not being deliberately dense. All *which* stats combined?

The only inferences I've found regarding the use of guns for protection are here, 13 studies:

GunCite: Frequency of Defensive Gun Use in Previous Surveys

The lowest number from the 13 studies is 764,036 uses of a gun for protection over the course of 5 years, so 152,000 +/- times per year. Compared to about 700 accidental deaths per year, that number is significantly higher and it would seem that you're many times more likely to use a gun for protection than to accidentally kill someone.

What did you use to draw your conclusion?

Thanks for posting that. Interesting, although the results of the survey seems to have a very high deviation. I mean, number of gun use for self protection in the last 5 years is between 764,000 and 1,800,000?

In a way, I'm not surprised by the frequency of guns being used for protection. I know two people who used them to protect themselves here in Alabama.

Person #1: She was walking to a nearby gas station to get some cigarettes late at night. 4 men in a car stopped near her and started talking to her and sort of made thinly veiled threats. That's when she pulled out her gun on them. They backed off, got back in their car, and drove away.

Person #2: He owns a lot of houses to rent them out. Most of the houses he rents out are in low income areas/bad neighborhoods. He was fixing up one of the houses he just bought when 2 guys came in to rob him. He pulled out his gun on them and they backed away and ran off.

What do they have in common? They put themselves in dangerous areas/situations. No wonder why they needed a gun and ended up using it. Which is fine with me, I'm very happy that they were able to use their guns to ensure their safety.

I don't walk around late at night alone to get ciggies. I don't go into bad neighborhoods where crime frequently occurs. For a person like me, the probability of me needing a gun is extremely low. I wouldn't be surprised if, for me, the probability of accidentally killing someone is higher than the probability of using it for protection.

Anyway, like I said, guns are overrated. My friend uses her 2 big dogs for protection. A simple bark is enough to scare away any perp. :)

Oh, GAWD! Not that old apples to oranges comparison again!:laugh2:

How many cars are there in comparison to the gun owners?

Yes, it's true that car collisions are pretty much preventable in nearly all of the cases. It's due to people's bad driving habits and not being careful. These are two entirely different scenarios to use as a comparison since there are different factors.

I do wish people would take their driving more seriously than they do these days. However, that's a different subject.

What a lot of people don't realize is that the deaths caused by guns and cars cannot be compared to each other. They are added to the total number of deaths. 50 deaths caused by car collisions, 50 deaths caused by gun accidents, they both add up to a total of 100, not 50 deaths.

then why do gas stations or 7-11 open 24/7? our life should not be dictated by some bogeymen

I'll repost since it hasn't been answered

You, Jillio, and TheWriteAlex (formerly) live in gun-friendly states where CCW permit shall be issued.

So have any of you encountered any incident with a CCW holder? was your life ever put in danger by a CCW holder? were any of you hurt by CCW holder?

I don't associate with CCW holders as a general rule. But my life has never been threatened by anyone carrying a gun illegally, either, and I am in neighborhoods where the chance of heat being packed illegally is high.:cool2:

I'm currently in Alabama where it seems everyone and their dog has a gun. I have to say that I faced more violence by those who didn't carry a gun than by those who did.

that doesn't really answer my question so it would be nice if you can answer my question directly. I'll repost in orderly fashion for your convenience.

1. Have you encountered any incident with a CCW holder?
2. Was your life ever put in danger by a CCW holder?
3. Were you hurt by CCW holder?

:ty: kindly

They are open to serve the people that aren't paranoid.:laugh2:

oh? but you supported Daredevil's Post #661 that people shouldn't be walking around late at night..... and your post above contradicts with your "like".

mind-boggling.....

I answered it above Jiro. Try reading it again.

No contradiction at all. Did you see me laughing at the question. My answer was a joke.

But DD is right. If you feel you are being put in danger by being out late at night in a crime ridden area, you really need to not be going out. The answer isn't going anyway and taking a gun with you. I thought you were about taking responsibility for your own safety.

So you're saying I should be paranoid and hypervigilant???

Do you ask the people you meet whether or not they have CCW permits? Otherwise, how do you know? CCW permit holders don't go around announcing that.

Forgive me. I'm afraid I don't understand it too clearly. Can you kindly answer each of my questions in a numbered format? I'll clarify - my questions are relating to CCW holders, not criminals.

You mean I didn't have to get this CCW tattoo? I've been scammed!

I like this post from other thread

There is always one bad apple anywhere you go. Can't extrapolate it to an entire population no matter how hard you try.:laugh2:

hhhmmmmmmmm.......... I'm trying to find one bad apple (referring to bad CCW holder). help me?

The CCW holders and gun fanatics around here stand out like sore thumbs. There is a particular attitude that goes with it. Not hard to pick out.

You have been given plenty of examples. In fact, naisho even posted examples for you. All you have to do is read the statistics.:laugh2: I am not responsible for the fact that you ignore information already provided for you.:cool2:
