okay ad'ers. ask me anything (but be nice! :))

What is your favorite book? *i started Deaf like me earlier*

2. i used to participate on deafnotes, but eventually stopped posting because the board wasn't active enough for my liking.

You used to post on Deafnotes? What was it like there dealing with the moderators? Did you ever get banned for saying anything the mods didn't like?

guilia,

i just did a google search for "driver's license + adhd" and answered my own question. apparently, teenagers with adhd are at a higher risk of speeding and getting into accidents.

Tell me about it. It applies to adults too. :P

I remember I totaled my dad's favorite car when I was 21 or 22. I didn't get my driver license till I was 21 years old because neither of my parents wanted to teach me how to drive. I've been in four or five car accidents and so many parking lot accidents that I've lost count. My own dad reported me for a hit and run accident. No one was hurt. It was just my first parking lot accient which happened in a bad section of Richmond and I left a long scratch on my Dad's car. I didn't want to get shot or something... so I left. Bad idea.

Most of my parking lot accidents were in the DRS parking lot in Richmond on Broad street. It was small and people would park there illegally so it was hard not to back up into a car. I learned to park at the Indepentant Living Center parking lot instead.

My last accident happened 8 months ago when I was driving into my old Apt parking lot and some erractic driver made sudden starts and stops and then he decided to park his truck then changed his mind and backed up into me.

I don't mean to sound mean but.... based on what you're saying - I think it's best if you do not drive again until you pass additional driving course and defensive driving course.... just for your own and everybody's safety.

or... sometimes... what plays a big factor in being a "lousy" driver at first is the size of vehicle. Starting out with a big/large vehicle is very difficult to learn and to master and it's always a good idea to start out with a small/medium car.

just my :2c:

yes. deafnotes was the first deaf forum i ever participated on, but i didn't post frequently. i stayed out of the ci debates because i knew that if i said some of the things i wanted to say, i definitely would have been banned.

if you don't mind my asking, do you have adhd?

Well, I haven't had a major accident in at least 5 years and perhaps longer.
When I first started having parking lot accidents, I drove my dad's medium sized car. I have depth perception problems so nowadays when I park my car in a parking lot I make it a point to park my car where I don't have to back up if at all possible. And I avoid all parking lots like the DRS one as much as possible.

My Ford is medium sized. I make it a point to eat before driving so I don't end up drifting because I skipped meals. I 'm diabetic so skipping meals is a no no. I took some driver courses in my early 20s because of my tickets and accidents.

Your 2 cents is appreciated though.

ooohh.. depth perception problem. yea I know that problem. hhhmmmmmmm.....

1. here's a trick - if you do park in garage... ask your dad to park the car properly with correct distance between the wall and the front bumper. then tie a string to tennis ball and hang it up on the ceiling with the tennis ball touching the windshield.

2. if you park on driveway - place a pole/cone/whatever next to your driver side so that you know you're parking within correct distance.

Hopefully - over time.... one of those tricks will help overcome your depth perception issue. :cool2:

Would you be interested in making an account on AOL Instant Messenger or Yahoo Messenger? I would really enjoy chatting with you, and know some other folks that would too. <smile>

I have no garage myself but if I were to use my parent's garage, I'd use the fridge in the garage as a gauge. It won't go over well with my parents if I knock it over.

I'm afraid my apt parking lot has no marker other than my wall so I use that. However, advice is quite useful for parking in friend's driveway.

It has. Unfortnately, I don't seem to be able to stay out of other erratic drivers' way. Perhaps i'm not attentive or wary enough. Last year some idiot took out the grille on my old ford when his SUV backed up into it. I didn't even have enough time to sound the horn. 2 years ago, I was behind a van and ready to turn left into the road from the parking lot. All of a sudden the van reverses and I sound the horn twice and it keeps backing up so I grab the driver shift to throw my car into reverse but it's too late. Van backs up into my car. I'm like Hey didn't you hear my horn? She said she thought it was coming from the left not behind her. GRRR.

damn deafskeptic.... sorry that you had a rough driving experience.... hopefully it gets better from now on :cool2:

deafskeptic, my father manages to park very well without depth perception. He doesn't use any tennis balls or cones or anything either. Maybe I can ask him for some pointers and pass them along to you?

I noticed in another thread you bought a 32 inch flatscreen. If you can't see it, why not just buy the smallest digital tv?

:laugh2: my thought exactly. I was guessing it's to share with sighted guests

i bought a 32 inch tv for three reasons: 1. i already have a tv stand that holds a 32 inch set, 2. as jiro said, i bought it for guests that come over and would like to watch tv and 3. larger tv's have better sound quality than smaller tv's. i did see a nice 15 inch flat screen that i liked, but this obviously would have been too small for friends and family to watch comfortably. :giggle: besides that, why should i be limited to purchasing a smaller tv just because i'm blind?
