okay ad'ers. ask me anything (but be nice! :))

i bought a 32 inch tv for three reasons: 1. i already have a tv stand that holds a 32 inch set, 2. as jiro said, i bought it for guests that come over and would like to watch tv and 3. larger tv's have better sound quality than smaller tv's. i did see a nice 15 inch flat screen that i liked, but this obviously would have been too small for friends and family to watch comfortably. :giggle: besides that, why should i be limited to purchasing a smaller tv just because i'm blind?

I did not think you should be limited. I just like spending money on things I can really enjoy. I didn't know the bigger tv had better sound.

one of the nice things about this new tv is the fact that it has vertical speakers along the left and right sides of the tv screen. this is the only model i saw which had this feature. i used to have an older tv which had this as well and i found that it's much easier for me to hear when speakers are vertically placed on opposite sides of the tv screen instead of having a horizontal speaker along the bottom.

That is interesting. I don't know about speakers, but we have a 32 inch also and I like the size of closed captions better on a bigger screen. I would really like to have a 47 inch, but will be waiting until the prices go down a lot.

i've also heard that captioning appears larger on bigger tv screens.

i looked at 42 inch tv's, but many of them were priced way above my budget.

what i would *love* to have is a 60 inch tv or larger just because of their excellent sound quality. i know i could connect my stereo system to my current 32 inch tv and receive good sound that way, but my tv stand doesn't hold anything except for a tv and i really don't have the room for a large entertainment center.

just saying... if it's just for yourself - you could buy small digital HDTV and have some money left over for good-quality speakers. but yea - I think your bf would appreciate your new 32" hdtv very much... at least both of you will enjoy watching it :laugh2:

my dad is a fanatic audiophile and we have several speakers. the clarity of sound is amazing. but of course.. it's not cheap lol but for you - you can find speakers with good clarity for a good price... probably Sony speakers

i'm an audiophile myself, but i can't afford to pay exhorbitant prices for that kind of equipment. right now my stereo system consists of a pair of realistic mach 2 speakers, a fisher receiver, fisher double cassette deck and sony
cdp-101 cd player all from the early 80s. i've had it for years and it sounds great. (fisher was considered top of the line back in the late 70s and early 80s) given how good it sounds, i can only imagine how fantastic today's audio equipment is.

oh no no - you do not need to pay exorbitant price for those audiophile equipment for your tv. I was just saying that when buying a small digital hdtv, you'll have plenty enough to buy additional speakers (for left and right side) that are good quality. Sony speakers have its own stand.... it's a long vertical rectangular shape. It is not that expensive. Just a thought. :cool2:

i might purchase a 15 inch hdtv for my kitchen, but haven't decided yet. right now i'm using a combination am/fm/tv boombox from the early 80s. i've been thinking about getting cable throughout my apartment, so if that's what i decide to do, i will definitely look into the 15 inch hdtv and sony speakers.

Oh, Hear Again, I recalled you saying that you ride bus. Now I have a question... How do a deaf-blind know the bus has arrived?? I am not talking about the time with CI but before CI time.

Hear Again, your boyfriend sounds really cool. Do you mind telling us a bit more about him?

Same here. I am surprised at that.

larger tv's sound better because they have larger speakers. the larger the speaker, the better the sound quality. the smaller the tv, the smaller the speaker and the poorer the sound quality.

prior to receiving my ci's, my guide dog tigger let me know a bus was in front of me by standing up and then guiding me towards it. (she still does this now even though i have ci's.)

when i use my cane, i can tell a bus has pulled in front of me by feeling the air around me.

Hear Again, your boyfriend sounds really cool. Do you mind telling us a bit more about him?

sure. he's 38 and a computer programmer. some of his hobbies include computers (of course), downhill skiing, watching movies, cooking, listening to music and collecting DVDs. he used to live in a very small town here in wisconsin before moving to the surburbs where he and i presently live. fortunately for me, he plans to relocate to arizona with me when i move there this summer. right now we're trying to decide between living in phoenix, mesa, tempe or tucson. i'm leaning more towards tucson or mesa. tucson because i've been there before and really loved the city and mesa because one of my sisters will be moving there within the next 2 years.

Wow Hear Again, that's interesting to know. What's your man dabble in programming?

Arizona seems to be a nice place to be, especially during the winters because it seems a lot warmer. But for the summers, there's more heat, guess you can't have everything.

my boyfriend has been working with computers since 1984 (same as me), so he's familiar with all kinds of different programming. he even has an old commodore 64 that he plays 70s/80s video games on as well as a small tandy (radio shack brand) computer he uses for keeping track of dates and appointments.

as far as arizona is concerned, i don't mind the heat at all. i've been in triple degree heat before for extended periods of time and it doesn't bother me. i'm more of a hot weather person than a cold weather person. at least in arizona you don't have to deal with blizzards, snowbanks, icy sidewalks, freezing rain, wind or subzero temperatures. i'm *so* glad this will be my last winter spent here in wisconsin! :D

That's great to know. You guys started on PC's the year after I was born!
I started dabbling in PC stuff personally since 1989-90's, I missed out on all that Atari/Commodore rage and went straight into the NES world.

Are you able to go shopping for groceries by yourself or do you need help in selecting some foods like canned tomatoes?

On that note, how can you sort out your canned food and food that are frozen and spices that you store? Do you have a system that says tomatoes go in one shelf and a can of beans go into another self or anything like that?
