okay ad'ers. ask me anything (but be nice! :))

Thanks :)
Sorry to tease you a bit, but can you please give me links from publications like "The Lancet", "Nature".... ? Because it's the way to prove them that being under medication when you have ADHD is safer for driving than being unmedicated.

Giulia,
Here in the US we call them Urgent Care centers. We docs call them "doc in the box" because they are often free-standing facilities reminiscent of fast food places. Hear Again, I would consider the otc eye drops first, as your symptioms sound allergic. If that's not successful, and it's not an emergency, you might try to hold off until the morning and see your own doctor. I'm afraid ERs in the US are overused/abused and sometimes that compromises the care of people with truly life-threatening problems. If the simple OTC solutions don't help, medical attention should be sought.

I'd be glad to go to urgent care if they were open when I need them, but they close on nights and weekends, which seems to be when things happen that require urgent care but are not the traumatic things the ER is made to handle, so I end up going to the ER.

I think it's because OTC eye drops tend to be of bad quality. My eye doctors always told me the same too.

My eye doctor told me OTC eye drops have preservatives that are not good for the eyes, and prescription ones don't.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I was wondering if during your hospitalization you were allowed Internet access. That was one of my main fears about hospitalization because I don't know what I'd do without my Internet.

While I was in hospital, I had no internet access, except I was permitted to use my phone, so I logged onto Live Messenger on my phone and talked to whoever I could using that.

during all of my mental health inpatient hospitalizations (and one hospitalization in the early 90s when i had a bad case of the flu or food poisoning -- doctors weren't sure which one i had) i was allowed to use the phone. at my most recent mental health inpatient hospitalization, i'm sure they would have allowed me internet access if i had asked, but since most of our day was structured around art therapy, relaxation classes and daily appointments with a psychiatrist, there really wasn't any time to surf the net except during the evening hours.

Thanks. Hopefully I could do something like that if I get hospitalized.

Thanks for answering. Jilli doesn't really consider it a walk unless she does get off the lead. Luckily she has a really great recall.

Hear Again
OMG! I’m speechless. Everything you have had to overcome to live a full life that able bodies take for granted, Kudos to you for being optimistic and adventurous in your trek through life.

Question-
You apparently had hearing in the past and progressively lost your hearing which led to the CI. What is hearing like with the CI vs. normal hearing or using HAs?

I’m currently wearing HAs and was told I was a good candidate for CIs. I’m afraid to have the surgery and find out that I’m no better off then with the HAs since I no nothing about CI.

thanks for the compliment -- and welcome to ad! <smile>

i don't know what "normal" hearing is like (since my former hearing aid audis think i was born with a mild hearing loss because newborns in the late 60s/early 70s were not given hearing screenings like they receive today), so i can't comment on that.

however, hearing with ci's is *wonderful*. i'm able to hear far more detail than i ever could with hearing aids. i can hear more environmental sounds such as the rain pitter-pattering against the window or a cat's meow. i can hear my name being called from across the room (provided there is no background noise). i can hear instruments being played alone or in unison and have a new appreciation for jazz and classical music given the fact that i was unable to make sense of what i hear with this genre when i wore hearing aids. i'm also able to hear intonation when a person sings as well as inflection, happiness, excitement or anger in their voice. in my case, what i hear with my ci's sounds "normal" and exactly like what i remember before i started wearing hearing aids. having said that, in the beginning after my ci's were activated, everything sounded metallic, but this gradually improved over time. long story short, i *love* my ci's and the hearing they have given me.

by the way, if you ever have any questions about ci's, feel free to send me a message here or under my profile. i'll be more than happy to answer them. <smile>

Hear Again,

Tomorrow I return to work so even though I will be able to drop in once in a while and look around I won't have time to become involved in any extended dialogues.

I want you to know that I have learned a lot from you during our forum conversations; about you, about myself, about trauma, about dealing with problems in our lives, and dealing with people in our lives. I believe our interactions have made me a better person who can deal with myself and with others in a more effective, understanding manner. My ability to cope with adversity has always been good. Now it is even better.

Nika, if you read this, I appreciate you as well.

My wish for you both is to have good dreams.
