Obama nominates Sotomayor to Supreme Court

Thank you for the links. I rarely listen to Rush so I'm not current on what he said.

None of those quotes say that Rush is opposed to Sotomayor's nomination on the basis of her Puerto Rican ancestry. He referred to her statements, not her ethnicity.

Did Rush or Newt say that Sotomayor is not qualified for Supreme Court Justice position because she is Puerto Rican?

You're welcome.

Calling Sotomayer racist because of her statements is the same thing as criticizing her ethnicity. If she were not Hispanic, Rush wouldn't have had any reason to make such a claim.

If she had been white and said the same thing it would be a racist remark. It has nothing to do with being Hispanic.

Personally, I don't believe any particular race or ethnicity has the monopoly on judicial ability.

Even Rush isn't stupid enough to slam on someone just because they are Hispanic... but just look at their reasons... "reverse racist" "She was only hired because she's Hispanic", etc, etc. um.. lame.
That wouldn't be a criticism of Sotomayor but of the person nominating her.

Exactly. His meaning is clear. He doesn't have to be so explicit so as to say the exact words, "Sotomayor is unqualified because she is Hispanic." in order for his meaning to come through loud and clear. I guess the right is waiting on him to release another CD similar to "Barack the Magic Negro" before they admit his bigotry. Obama coud have nominated Jesus Christ himself, and Rush would have found something offensive to say.

True but it also implies an invalidation of Sotomayor's nomination.

(Man... I'm starting to sound like Jillio!?!?!?!)

Perhaps if you read her speech in its entirety, and were not taking a portion of a statement totally out of context, which is exactly the same thing Rush and Newt have done, you would see that there was absolutely nothing racist in her remarks. In fact, attempting to state that race, gender, and SES does not contribute to the person one becomes and the perspective they take towards life and others is what is racist.:cool2:

That's because you hit the nail on the head with this one.

Yeah, and we all know how good ole Rush feels about the nominator.

I really find it odd that those who want to defend comments of public figures such as Rush and Newt in regard to Sotomayors nomination appear to focus solely on the fact that she is a Hispanic woman who believes that her experience growing up poor and minority status in both gender and race has influenced her perspective on the real world never seem to admit that the same holds true for them. They also conveniently steer away from her actual qualifications. Perhaps because the only thing they can find to object to is the fact that she is an Hispanic woman.:cool2:

First of all, I'm not defending anyone other than ensuring that they are not misquoted either.

Saying that one's upbringing influences their perspective and saying that one's perspective is "better" than another group's perspective are two different things.

I still haven't seen examples of anyone saying that she is not qualified just because she is Hispanic/Latina.

No where did Sotomayor claim her perspective was better. She claimed it was different.

Have patience. Maybe Rush will create another "Barack the Magic Negro" CD in regards to Sotomayor, and you will then have the concreteness you seem to need in his racist and bigoted remarks.

The only way one can misquote Rush is insinuate that anything he says has any foundation whatsoever in truth or intelligence.

Now, how about Sotomayor's qualifications?

"I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."

This thread isn't about me so I don't know why you felt compelled to make such a snide remark.

Aren't you the clever one.

What about them specifically?

"I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."

Yep. She did not say her experience was better, but that her experience had the potential to lead her to better conclusions than someone who has never experienced adversity nor diversity in the same way. That is not saying her experience is better, as yoy so claimed. But it's understandable that you would make that error in interpretation, given that the statement was taken out of context to start with.

It wasn't snide at all. You keep demanding that someone provide you with concrete wording, while at the same time, are refusing to look at Sotomayor's statements in context. Additionally, her statement was "better conclusions", not "my experience is better." You want to use implication in her words to determine meaning, yet you refuse to see the implication in Newt and Rush's words. Double standard.

Are you saying that Rush never played the CD "Barack the Magic Negro"? Of course he did, and it is extremely telling in regard to his own particular brand of racism. It is not inconceivable at all that he would repeat his behavior patterns in this instance.

Aren't you the clever one.

Thank you.:ty:

What about them specifically?

Pick an item out of her CV and go for it.
