District files appeal against deaf student

No, what I am saying is if there was an abuse incident that happened at the school where they attend currently, would u take them out?

We just have to be viligant with our children and the parents have to do the same for the children who go to dorms or boarding school. Abuse can happen anywhere..nope, doesnt make it right but hope CSDR changed their policies. That's what I am hoping my friend will answer for me. Still waiting for her email.

I wouldnt want to send my children to the dorms not because of the abuse..because I would MISS them too much!

EXACTLY! Which is why I relocated across 2 states to send my son as a day student. But some parents do not have that option, and to imply that their children are at more risk than any other child in any walk of life is absurd and unfair to those parents.

Do you have any idea how well supervised these kids in the dorms are these days? My son attended deaf school as a day student, and he was probably less at risk than he would have been in a mainstream school for all types of abuse...including emotional abuse from teachers and bullying fromhearing students.

Oh gosh..the rules for the dorm staff at my work are so unbelievably strict and I am happy. No staff are allowed to be alone with any student at any time. If they are caught alone intentionally, it is immediate suspension without pay.

Some of their rules applies for us teachers and other staff during the daytime too which is fine with me cuz I dont want to put myself in the position for false accusations...no thanks.

And these things don't happen in the public schools, or churches, or Boy Scout and Girl Scout camps? Just the deaf schools, huh?

I think the church abuses are the worst...the stories about the preists abusing the children are just so chilling cuz we are supposed to have 100% faith in them. Creepy!

Agreed. Supervision is stricter at a residential school because they are in the position of having to make sure that they are way above any of these false accusations of constant abuses occuring at deaf schools.

I agree with you on that one. And it would appear to happen on an almost daily basis according to the news stories.

It would be hard for me to answer that question. I am not sure if I would take them out it would depend on the situation and what the school did to resolved the problem and what they would do for the kids for it not to happen again.

You are right abuse can happen anywhere.

I would also never send my kids because I would miss them too much and because I would be worried that something could happen.

Never said it couldn't happen elsewhere, it just as a parent I would be more out of touch if my kids were in a dorm type school where they slept there. It doesn't have to be a deaf school there are other types school where their students dorm there.

So, if it happens at the public school your child attends, you would wait to see how the situation was handled, and leave them there....but if it happens at a deaf school it is a reason not to send a child there?

I would worry too..nothing wrong with that but to say that CSDR is bad cuz of the dorms is kinda using what happened there 2 or 3 years ago to put the blame on everyone who works there. Many teachers and day staff dont associate with dorm staff on a daily basis so they dont have control over what happens at the dorms. Same thing at my work..if something happened at the dorms and the public blamed me and other teachers for that, it would suck cuz I would be at home minding my own business and not have a clue to what is going on at the dorms so it wouldnt be fair to include us in the blame .

I just hope CSDR adopted the same strict policies that my work has adopted.

I know of a case where a older student abused of a younger student. I can understand where supervision is stricter but can the staff be awake all night and make sure that this doesn't happen.

I dont know about CSDR but at my work, we have overnight staff who work from 10PM to 8 AM..they have to stay awake just like the day staff have to stay awake for our jobs.

So it was an older student that abused the younger student, not the staff. Oh well..older kids abusing younger kids is very rampant due to more exposure to voilence on TV and games which is why laws are getting stricter about filling out incident reports. That's unfortunate that the student did that...sighs

I wouldn't have to deal with it happening at a deaf or dorm type school because I wouldn't ever send my kids to one. I wouldn't send my children to a deaf school because that is not the type of family that we are, remember we are an oral family and I haven't heard of oral dorm type of school and even if there was one I wouldn't send them. I actually would do what you did Jillio is move to where the best school was for my children. We have moved a couple of times so that my children could go to the best school possible.

I am not saying that CSDR is bad because of these events, I am saying that I know of a couple of really bad things that happen there.

U say u are an oral family..what does that mean? U say that your kids are learing sign language...

But you used it as a reason not to send students to deaf schools, and as justification for why they were safer in a public school. Did you ever send your kids to camp? Or to church?

And I was jsut listening to the news as I type, and a camp counselor has been charged with molesting young boys at a church camp. He was charged today. This past school year, a MRDD young firl was molested by two older boys at a public school within 45 miles of where I live. She reported it to the principal, the principal didn't believe her, and has since been dismissed for failure to protect that child. A coach in this state was recently dismissed after charges of gross sexual imposition for fodling a student on the team bus. None of these incidents happened either of the schools for the deaf in this state, but at public schools and all cases involved hearing kids. Can you be awake all night to protect your children? Can you be every where they are all the time? Because the chance of it happening in a public school is greater than it happening in a deaf school. Why? Because there are more public schools with a greater number of staff and faculty and students.

U say u are an oral family..what does that mean? U say that your kids are learing sign language...

As I explained before we have raised our children orally. They have learn sign language in middle school. My son thinks he knows sign language but doesn't really. Socially and with her friends my daughter has pretty good signing skills. There are times where she doesn't know a sign but her friends know she was raised orally so they fingerspell the word to her. Just because we are an oral family does not mean we are anti signing. Since it is summer my signing skills are much better now but by winter my signing gets rusty. In the summer, my children friends spend a lot of time in our home so I get a lot of practice.

No I haven't send my kids to any church camps. I have sent my son once to a Science camp, honestly I was kind of worried but his teacher was going and I felt very comfortable with her so I let him.

They are both going to a cross country camp this summer. I feel more comfortable because they are older and are both going. Boys coach is the girls coaches father so that comforted me. Just the way I am.

"Pretty good" signing skills are hardly sufficient to function as a terp. And oral by definition, is the use of no sign language. So wouldn't that mean, since your daughter and son have opted to learn sign language, that they do not fucntion as oral deaf?

I didn't ask if you sent them to church camp, just to church. And are you aware of the fact that most sexual abuse occurs at the hands of someone well known to the family that was considered a trusted friend or acquaintance?
