well of course they have to work. everyone does. but why assume every college grade has a gimme attitude? they just want to work like everyone else and why wouldn't they want to?

to be a dentist, a doctor, an engineer, fireman, a tax accountant, a scientist, one has to go to college, either community college or state college or ivy league, that's just the way it is and of course when they graduate, they would want to pursue a career in the field they studied for. that's to be expected. why does that strike you as gimme gimme gimme?

A fireman does not have to have a college degree. They have to be certified by the State.

most of unemployed college grads are not doctors, tax accountants, engineers or scientists. most of them have useless degrees or lack qualifications but they mostly have "gimme gimme gimme" attitude.

and most of firemen are not college grads either.

I said "community, state or ivy league college"...

community college enrollment are on the rise. it's hugely popular for the past couple years because its tuition is very affordable and flexible. I would encourage my future kids to do community college for the first couple years and then enroll into somewhere better if they want to.

by doing that - I'll probably save at least $25,000. that's a smart investment.

well, you may have a point. apparently only 4.3% of college grads are unemployed. It could be they are unqualified or various other factors.

The unemployed grads you speak of, what useless degrees do they have?

I am still shaking my head over this attitude you have that college grads have a gimme attitude just because they want to gain employment in the field they studied in. Still not understanding that.

Yes, some people think upon graduation that they should already be at the top of the ladder and I have to laugh at them because everyone knows you've got to earn your stars and work from the bottom up to be properly experienced and qualified. That such high ranking positions have to be earned.

You tell us....I saw at least 15 pages of want ads between the local papers Sunday. Why aren't they interviewing instead of hanging out at Bill and Ted's Excellent Campground if they want to work. Fuzzy's Tacos is hiring for all positions as well. I saw the sign today.

Umm, because they expect someone to give it to them? I want to be a NASCAR driver but they won't let me... :hmm: ... what should I poop on?

It is still not required to have a "college degree" to be a firefighter. Just saying.

It is a service job.

Never said firemen had to get a college degree, said one has to go to community, state or ivy college to be qualified for various careers.

English. Math. Art History. Business. Marketing. Communication. etc. I'm sorry but these are incredibly useless degrees unless they're really good at it and they didn't waste any time to rack up experience before they graduate.

Your last paragraph contradicts with previous paragraph because it indicates that you understand what I'm talking about.

I've been in fields long enough to see things that many people don't understand. I've seen many unqualified people and lazy people in professional jobs. I've also seen many people doing the jobs that they didn't get degree in.

they expect to be employed. of course. who wants to be unemployed and broke? no one. they go out there and pound the pavement looking for work just like everybody else. And um, yeah, i would think a tax accountant would rather find a job in tax accounting than at a taco stand and that naturally, he would look for work in that field when he's browsing through want ads.

lol - unemployed tax accountants? I doubt it. Maybe lazy or incompetent type but I've never really heard of unemployed tax accountants because it's a very hirable occupation since it's a very specialized field.

Any specialized occupation is easily hirable because it's always in high demand but if you're gonna pick a broad, general field... good luck!

you made it sound like all college grads have a gimme attitude. that i dont agree with. there are unemployed grads who are qualified but wrong place, wrong time and then there are employed grads who have no qualifications for the jobs they got. like you, i've seen that far too often particularly at one company I worked for that had a big staff.

It's not the want....it's the expectation Their position isn't available yet instead of adjusting they expect government to magically create one for them.

If they really want a certain position they could always go in and offer to work for free/cheap for a while to prove their worth. I rebuilt a house for free in order to get in with a large insurance company. They ended up paying me in the end and they were my biggest client for a long time.

Sometimes you have to adjust. Better to wash dishes and eat that sleep under a tarp and whine....that's not going to get you anywhere. You can flip burgers at night and hunt jobs during the day. As for pounding the pavement.....what happens under the tarp, stays under the tarp.

I too graduated during bad state of economy and I landed a few jobs no problem. My brother landed a few jobs no problem too. was it easy? no.

why did we get jobs when other people in same position didn't? simple - we're hard workers and they aren't. we didn't waste time racking up experience and internship in college and they did. we didn't have self-entitlement attitude nor expectation upon graduation and they did.

true. I got a degree in History which was a stupid idea. I actually wanted to be either a civil engineer (I'm fascinated with human traffic flow patterns and always thinking of ways it can be improved whether it's timing of traffic lights or efficiency at airports) or a financial consultant. My father wanted me to be a well rounded education and really pushed me into history. Ended up studying graphic design after university so I could get an actual employable skill.

It's true, one should study where the demands are and focus on them if they want to be employed.
