CI--Deaf or Hearing?

 Rick, ahh, an 'old-timer' on the forum :) . I was just wondering today if it really is possible that there have been only 7, maybe 8 parents of kids with CIs on this forum, not including any who stopped in for a week and left after witnessing the conflicts here -- do you know of others beyond you, Cloggy, Faire Jour, Drew'sDad, Rockdrummer, JackieSolozano, and me. Maybe Cole's Mom for about a month. Anyone else?

That would be a proportionate number based on the incidence of CI implantation in the deaf/Deaf population. CI implantees are still very much a minority.

BTW, Rockdrummer's son did not have a CI.

You are stepping over the line in your assumption as to why anyone does not post on this forum. Please show some proof of what you are stating as to the reasoning.

Rockdrummer's son had a CI, but it didn't work for him.

LilysDad, AshleysMommy, MomtoToes..... I can think of a few more, but don't recall their usernames.

That's what I recall, too. He had some kind of ossification issue that they tried to work around initially, wasn't it something like that? I loved his posts.

And a few of them, I still have contact with through email.

Most will choose at some point to go oral only. They tend to flock to the forums that support the Oral perspective. Makes perfect sense to me. If they have no interest in the Deaf perpsective, they will not find much in this forum for them.

I think so, and he had to have the ear packed. I liked Rockdrummer too. I never understood why he left.

:laugh2: I just took a look at the last few posts by several of these no-longer-posting parents -- MomtoToes was a delight, I "know" her (well, only in that I've read her posts :) ) through other venues. Seems like there was a common element in quite a few of these final conversations. :laugh2:

Um I thought his son's CI failed?

Yes, it was ossification. But early in, I recall they were preparing the child for the possiblity of another implant, and had explanted in preparation. However, a decision was made not to go forward with a second implant.

Yes, it failed. But see my post that came after this to explain.

In fact, we have had more than one hearing parent of a child with a CI that has failed.

You know, I think what would be even more interesting than the number of hearing parents who fail to make a committment to learning about the Deaf perpsective via this forum would be the number of adults that were raised orally that continually praise the fact that they have, at last, found a place where they feel as if they belong. It would appear that this forum is serving a vital need for those members of the deaf community. And, I might suggest, more realistically fulfills the intent of this website being created.

I think one of those parents is posting right here in this thread.

I like Grendel, and I won't worry about whether she has an agenda or not. I was struck by her early success with her daughter, and my fingers are crossed that she will continue to be relatively free of problems. Notice I said relatively free, since of course there will be problems. I am curious about what kind of problems she and her daughter will face in the future, you know? I think Grendel is one of the exceptional parents I know of, and I am always glad to see her words of her journey, and I sense her willingness to change her methods if necessary. I just hope I could see honest words from her child, but that is much later, if it ever happens. Anyway, kudos to Grendle. I am glad she is here, for one.
You, on the other hand, I am ambivalent about. :giggle:

:ty: despite our olde and tormented historie, no less. You'll definitely see Li , and she has a mind of her own, that's for sure, so there's no telling what we'll all find out.

You do realize that Ocean is hearing, don't you?:giggle:

Um yes, I'm very much aware of that. I also know she's been on the forum for a very, very long time.
