Another recall for AB

Some random thoughts on reading above comments. To the best of knowledge the patient getting the Implant is NOT awake and whatever surgical tools required- the surgeon decides. My operation was at Sunnybrook/Toronto in July 07 and don't recall any discussion what tools he used. I have an Advanced Bionics-Harmony model. No complaints so far.

Unofficial AB news is that aside from the first two patients with issues, of the other 9, four have been shown to be not having the problems associated with this recall. No word on the other 5. Also interesting to me, the first two instances were separated by at least a year.

Our daughter is having a wonderful time with her new AB implants, turned on 11/24 at 13 months old. No second thoughts on the decision.

Great news on your little one! I remember how much fun that early discovery of sound was -- what am I saying, it's still so much fun everyday! But I'm so happy for you that you've had the opportunity to go for both at once, and so early! All the best.

Hey that's great news!! You must be so excited. What have you been noticing her doing/reacting to so far?
Wish you all the best!

Doesn't mean the ones that aren't currently having problems won't have those same problems in the future.

Actually the recall notice stated that the problem addressed by this recall would occur within the first 90 days of use if it was going to happen.

Our daughter loves activating toys that play music now. And she goes to the door looking for the dogs if they bark. Plus she's really become more vocal. Also I think hearing us make noise with SEE signs has really bolstered her sign language.

Excellent!!!! The key is to really give your kid as many possible tools and then follow their lead. It does seem like nowadays most dhh kids can get some hearing and some speech skills nowadays.

Fantastic!!!!

Take this opportunity to expose her to as much language as possible. Talk and sign to her whenever possible. The Fisher-Price toys of different things like the farm, fire station etc were great for fun play coupled with language development. You may want to also look at the John Tracey Clinic's home correspondence course as it is free and has a lot of great ideas.

Best wishes.

Well Jillio you are correct-who can possible know of all future possibilities of potential problems re: their Cochlear Implant and their life in general? In the meantime one must just "get on with life". I have an Advanced Bionics-Harmony and have crossed 3 years. Okay for another 3 years as a I have a complete replacement of all external items-10 years from now?Still alive?
Enough to worry about in the short time horizon of current life.

Hey, if you want to leave some of the variables out of your cost benefit analysis, go ahead.

The variable in doing nothing was considered and rejected way back in early 2007. i hadn't heard that my deafness was/could be a "non pathological physical condition"- wasn't a member of alldeaf.com then.

That is not the variable I was referring to.

Hey, never to late to alter your perspective.

Which variable Jillio are you referring to? Why should I alter my perspective which is the end result of the ongoing study over the last 18 years? I still waiting for your explanation of "non pathological physical deafness! How come I never experienced it- Real?

Nevermind. When you get miserable enough, you'll get it. Or maybe you will just choose to live with your misery. I'm a firm believer in autonomy.

Why should I regress to "misery" over my choice to be implanted? Sorry not following your "non directive script"! Interesting-a believer in "autonomy" except for those deaf persons who reject the sociological theory of "cultural deafness". How can that be reconciled? Cognitive dissonance?
Would a" non directive discussion" with Dr Phil be of assistance? His website: drphil.com

At last you understand the phenomenon!!!

Really! Is this "phenomena"- reality? Is this sociological theory the imaginary basis of "non pathological physical deafness"? Which part of ones' body does this reside- Or does it? Which subset of persons get "this"-but not others?. Does other "human problems"-lack of arms/legs fit this as well? Being "blind" within this cultural classification?
I just checked one of my text books-Sociology=Canadian perspective- Robert Hagedorn et al Holt Rinehart Winston of Canada Ltd Toronto 1980. 626 pages. No reference to deaf people in the entire book.Culture and Social organization-Chapter 3 and Socialization Chapter 4
