Another recall for AB

Why would that be unethical since there are only three brands of CIs to choose from. Are you saying that the doc should be offering all three?

Kickbacks from a certain CI company?

And yet, there are those that claim that implant centers operate at a loss and that the surgeons perform the procedure for altruistic motives.

That may be true; in the mind of the surgeon. But, VERY FEW surgeons truly does this for purely altruistic reasons. If people honestly believe that ALL do, they're dreaming or in denial.

However, I believe that it's too much of a sweeping generality to say that ALL ENTS that implant are greedy and in it for the money. But, most are. That's just our society and how we operate (pun not intended). Nearly everything is driven by the almighty dollar.

I believe that an ENT should offer all three...definitely. Less competition; less kick back from one specific company, ect.

They cannot stay in practice without making a profit.

Well, if he were to offer all three, then wouldn't that be better, monetarily for him? There must be something more to this......conflict of interest or something else? Trying to get my mind around this one.....slightly different surgical procedure?.....

i have no idea.

Don't you find it fishy that they would only offer one brand? This isn't Coca Cola vs Pepsi here. lol

Yes.

When I was looking into it 2 years ago, my CI audi offered me all choices.

Possible, possibly not. And yes, the procedure will vary slightly between manufacturers. But as long as he has patients who accept that he just uses one brand it wouldn't affect him monetarily. And I would say that brand is not a huge consideration for many, particularly when it is a hearing parent deciding.

I think it has to do with training. not all cochlear implants come in the same size and shapes. but then again, new technologies from each companies keep coming out. So I guess some clinics do favor certain CI brand than the other.

OIC, well, that was from the audi. Did the audi have a doc who could do all three brands or just refer you to the one who implants your brand choice?

This was at the U of M hospital. It's huge. And their audiology department as well. They coordinate everything between initial (and follow-up mapping) visits, MRIs, ENTs, surgeons, etc. - it's all one big department. It's an actual CI center.

That's true, Jillio, but there are also other procedures that are done. ENTs also probably cut into the plastic surgery practice as well. It's a bit of a stretch to think that ONE product is going to make or break a surgeon. However, I don't disagree at all. You're correct that CI surgeons definitely ARE making money off of the device. It's a question of how much VS that of other surgeons. Doctors as a whole ALL live pretty comfortably.

So, in all probability, they would pick a doc who is most familiar with the brand chosen.

Like I wrote, technology change. Once they get familiar with one implant, a new one come out (like cochlear implant developed soft tip, self curling array)

so is it they are familiar with the company or the implant?
