Another recall for AB

what type of implant do children get beside CI

this is a voluntary recall.. AB is recalling the device to figure out why the 2 newly activated folks are having such problems with their devices, and they want to get the issue taken cared of before more people get the AB devices, to prevent similar problems. That's my understanding of this recall. I have already heard of at least 2 folks at hearingjourney.com that have had their surgeries delayed due to this recall so far.

That's also because they've had problems with this device in the past. If they didn't voluntarily recall the new device, can you imagine the drama that would create? AB is covering their butt. However, it's a good thing. They know what would happen if they were forced to recall.

It comes back to money. Voluntarily recalling a product looks better than being told to do it. Stocks in the company would fall and have a monetary impact on that company. Also, AB's reputation is also on the line.

So, yeah, they recalled the device. Makes perfect sense.

... I feel bad for those 2 recipients having to be explanted. Cochlear, Med-El, and AB all have problems from time to time, but often as every few months or a year is scary.

I'd hate to just cross my fingers and hope this implant surgery works out. I shouldn't be risking that. Noone should. It's a good thing that AB is fixing the issue, but none are perfect. Risk is there with all kinds of surgeries, but how often is scary as it gets.

Wishes out to the 2 patients and live on without problems.

I just heard that the two patients that started the recall have been successfully re-implanted with new AB devices with no issues so far. However all AB implant surgeries have been canceled in USA and postponed until it can be determine if this is a isolated case or a problem developing with the new implants in the pipeline. It much cheaper to solve this issue in house than in the field.

Wow.

I just heard the same too, about the 2 being successfully reimplanted.

That sucks, but I feel good! two patients are getting what they desired! Implanted with no issues. :)

Bet this would be a same thread if it was for Cochlear.

Recalled? Oh my lord!! That's really not good. Another surgery is very hard to go through Imagine. That site says too, $90,000.00. CI cost that much? WOW!

I know man. They're in excess of $100,000 sometimes too. imagine nearly a half of a million dollars in just two people, two implants.

Hmmm. A CI or a big rock (diamond) ring. Which should I choose? Hmm.
I'd rather have a small rock and the love that comes with it. My dearly departed husband sold his motorcycle to buy my engagement ring (I didn't care if I had one or not) and he bought me a small diamond because that's the size I wanted...if he was going to get me one. I thought about putting the diamond on a motorcycle pin to remember him by, but I hardly wear jewelry.

I've been married almost two years and we still don't have wedding rings. I guess he's saving up for my CI. LOL

After a simple google search... AB pretty much has recalls every year or two...

So that tells me one thing: People actually don't do research on what implants to get... Because AB is like the 2nd in market share..

Many times, a surgeon will limit the brand he implants to a single manufacturer. Then the patient must take what is offered or find another surgeon.

And yet, there are those that claim that implant centers operate at a loss and that the surgeons perform the procedure for altruistic motives.

That's true! I've forgotten about that. So unethical, imo.

That's what happened to my friend who contracted meningitis back in 2003 (18 mos after implantation). She went to a good hospital and probably had a good surgeon. Wasn't the fault of either. The device she was implanted with had the positioner that held the eletrodes in the cochlea. The positioner allowed fluid to become trapped in her middle ear/inner ear? The fluid became infected with strep, travelled to her brain, and she nearly died from meningtis.

The kicker? At the time of implantation, she was NOT told that the device she was implanted with was under recall. The decision she made nearly cost her her life. :(

Why would that be unethical since there are only three brands of CIs to choose from. Are you saying that the doc should be offering all three?
