Good point. What good will that American college degree do them if they can't get a job in the USA?

Look at people who had "silly" majors. Some of us...just want to study what we want to study.

At any rate, one student I'm thinking of in particular would study history if he had citizenship, but since he doesn't, he's looking at auto programs. He can still gain useful job skills. Let's not kid ourselves. Some undocumented immigrants make decent money. Most don't. But if I take my car into a shop, I don't give two shits if they have "papers". I want my car fixed/painted/tuned up/etc correctly! And that training is quite useful.

plus...I happen to think that college could better anyone if they take it seriously...I mean...you are talking to someone who justifies making history and American Government mandatory subjects.

When a student who is undocumented turns 17.5, they're screwed. Yet...they are still minors. They don't have choices. Where's the justice in that?

Anyway, those kids are pretty aware of what life could be like after high school.
right. I don't have problem with kids but I do with their parents. Their parents should think twice before illegally entering the country because the life will be hard for their kids since they will live like a criminal.

I don't like saying "illegal immigrants" because it 1) is pretty degrading when standing in front of a bunch of 14 year olds and 2) it's hard for me to say that a "person" is illegal. An act can be illegal, but a person? Illegal immigration, okay. Illegal immigrant? Doesn't ring right.
oh? well then how about this - criminal?

It may be hard for you to put yourself in their shoes, but for many many many kids, being in the States as a fugitive is still better than life in Juarez.

And no, I'm not going to call my students criminals. :/

If you have no problem with the kids, then why not let them have a pathway to citizenship?

Ask their parents. They knew what they were doing.

And yet, they did get a chance to graduate from an American high school. Seems that they did get a benefit after all.

Why would you say "illegal immigrant?" That's incorrect. Either someone is a legal immigrant or an illegal alien. There's no such thing as an illegal immigrant.

If it bothers you, you can say someone is an alien who crossed into the USA illegally. There's nothing wrong with being an alien. There is something wrong with illegally crossing borders.

Sorry, it's just not in my nature to subject children into a life of poverty because the U.S. has this indentured-servant type system with a low glass ceiling.

They wouldn't be here if we didn't (quietly) request it.

Since when does alien only mean those who do not have papers and immigrant meaning those who do? You can be an alien and have legal status.

You can be an immigrant and not have legal papers.

Thanks to God about DREAM Act failed in senate and there are few thing that I agree with GOP on issue with illegal immigrants, also other one is about gun rights too.

your heart is in right place but your agenda is misguided. It is illegal and wrong to harbor criminals. Is that what you want to teach them?

You can be an immigrant and not have legal papers.

how they can not be documented? all foreigners LEGALLY entering this country are documented.

so they get to live a "better life" in here at our expense? Their illegal action is what makes our lives miserable.

Again, I repeat. Kids who came here with their parents had no choice. If I see a kid who's been in the US since he was ten years old and has some serious potential as a US citizen and contributor to the community, why block that?

Anyway...this kid I'm helping right now did not want to leave before his 17.5 "birthday" because he wouldn't leave his mom behind by herself. Besides, if he goes back to Juarez, he'd be destitute and alone, unable to re-enter the U.S. for quite awhile. (He'd have to be 18, apply, wait, pay fees- almost impossible- and etc. before he could get a visa...not to mention needing a job or admission to a school...etc etc) In a way I was almost relieved that he decided to stay. I didn't want him in Juarez like that. :/

I have no problem with people going for whatever majors they want, as long as they are paying for it with their own money and not with funds or discounts obtained illegally.

There are no undocumented immigrants. Do you mean illegal aliens or legal immigrants?

...I happen to think that college could better anyone if they take it seriously...I mean...you are talking to someone who justifies making history and American Government mandatory subjects.
Of course, college can better anyone who takes it seriously. What does taking college seriously and getting in-state tuition discounts have to do with each other?

Are you saying make American government and history courses mandatory in college, regardless of major?

so they get to live a "better life" in here at our expense? Their illegal action is what makes our lives miserable.

wtf  How does this make your life miserable?

Then that's their trade off.

If you have no problem with the kids, then why not let them have a pathway to citizenship?
They already do but their parents chose not to follow it.

wtf  How does this make your life miserable?

It costs money. We're already spending billions and billions of dollars on this issue. plus - it breeds drug war.

Again, I repeat. Kids who came here with their parents had no choice. If I see a kid who's been in the US since he was ten years old and has some serious potential as a US citizen and contributor to the community, why block that?
we do not always block it. we are not that merciless. we do actually provide pathway for a person like what you just described. They'll have to pay hefty fines... like Cesar Milan.

life is always hard but if one has a moral compass and decency... one should learn that one should not resort to breaking laws in order to live better. Have some respect and dignity to oneself.

I don't think you get it...

One who has no paperwork is both an alien and an immigrant.

One can be an immigrant without being an alien. For example, my (adopted) mother is an immigrant from Israel. She is not, however, an alien.

Oh, really? So how does my student get citizenship (aside from marrying an American)?

Oh, do you mean go back to Mexico and pay hefty fines and wait ten years and then try to get back into the US?

Real logical.

IMHO it is immoral to damn children over things they have no control over.

That is *my* set of morals.

so what do you propose? Let him live like a criminal?

We do have immigration amnesty for illegals.
