In SC, the ID card is free for voters.

They can get rides to the polls or vote by mail, at least in SC. In our poor urban areas, polls are mostly within walking distance. People with disabilities can use the free bus service.

Yup, I don't know if our state legislative will include provision to offer voter ID with photo for free after pass the ID with photo requirement for voting.

It would be a good idea. Maybe they will consider that.

Yup, veteran homeless are not issue because they can have military ID with photo for free.

I'm favor for more encourage to vote and want to see historically high vote turnout.

we have millions of illegal immigrants. I certainly don't want them voting.

So Jiro, does this mean you're opposed to immigrants without papers voting? What about green card holders? Those with visas?

And what about places where immigrants can vote in municipal elections?

first of all.... I said ILLEGAL immigrants. They do not have rights to be here. They do not get to have same legal rights as legal immigrants (beside rights at legal proceeding).

why would you want illegals to vote?

So do you mind if people with work visas vote? Just curious.

yes I do mind. They have no legal rights to vote. Why would you want a foreigner to vote????? Do you want our country to be influenced by foreigners who have absolutely no best interest in our country?

I was pointing out that "illegal immigrant" and "immigrant" are not synonymous. :)

I remember about Oregon doesn't have polling centers anymore and they send ballot paper in mail to every American citizens.

foreigner comes here to live... hence immigrant but some came here illegally... hence illegal immigrant.

some people came here illegally just to work... hence undocumented worker.

*shrugs* If you say so.

citizens? how they can be citizens if they're undocumented? Either they're illegal or they're not. period.

No way, I don't want illegal immigrants to use taxpayer's expense to pay less college tuition since they are no belong to our country.

As far as undocumented immigrants not having access to in-state tuition...why oppose it? Do you know how hard it is for me to convince my students to study hard, do their homework, and shoot for college? Cripes. When I was in HS, your grades were important because it determined the college you got into.

But in some places...it doesn't matter...so where's the incentive? It just makes teachers look bad.

Hey, I have a lot of respect for my former students who are willing to pony up the $$$ to go to college when they know it won't grant them citizenship or a job. Some kids spent 99 per cent of their lives in the US and because of something their parents did, they're damned.

I totally support the DREAM ACT. I'd rather see more kids in a philosophy course and less on the streets. However, out of state tuition can be 2x as expensive. :/

That's too bad. There's something special about actually going to the polls and standing in line with other American citizens waiting to exercise our Constitutional right and responsibility. I enjoy going to the polls in person.

For many years because we were a military family and moved a lot, we voted by mail. It just wasn't the same feeling.

Oxymoron. If they're undocumented, then they aren't citizens. If they are citizens, then they're documented.

There are legal immigrants and illegal aliens. Legal immigrants can become citizens. Illegal aliens cannot become citizens.

Plus there are no Black Panthers standing by the mail box. What fun is that?

They aren't undocumented immigrants. They are illegal aliens. "Undocumented immigrants" is a term made up to sound more acceptable. It's meaningless. It sounds like the immigrant would be documented if only the dog hadn't eaten his papers while he was sneaking across the border.

While you were trying so hard to convince your students to study, did you also try to convince them that they shouldn't expect to benefit from breaking laws? Did you explain that there are consequences to not following the laws of the land?

How about out-of-country tuition? They aren't supposed to be here in the first place unless they follow the laws of immigration.

I have no problem with immigrants who obey our laws.

first lesson of the day - obey the laws.

how can students have a good life in here if they're illegal? when they apply for job, a company will perform background check.

Good point. What good will that American college degree do them if they can't get a job in the USA?

When a student who is undocumented turns 17.5, they're screwed. Yet...they are still minors. They don't have choices. Where's the justice in that?

Anyway, those kids are pretty aware of what life could be like after high school.

I don't like saying "illegal immigrants" because it 1) is pretty degrading when standing in front of a bunch of 14 year olds and 2) it's hard for me to say that a "person" is illegal. An act can be illegal, but a person? Illegal immigration, okay. Illegal immigrant? Doesn't ring right.

Yup, I will do vote in mail if I'm going to Gallaudet University.

I don't mind to vote at polling center or in mail but cons about polling center has ridiculously long waiting and difficult communication with poll workers if you are deaf voter but in our city, waiting isn't bad but will be last for an hour during presidential election and no waiting time to 15 minutes for midterm election. I have same feeling as you about vote in mail, if vote in mail get lost so I will be worried about my vote isn't counted because I had issue with lost mail sometime. Vote at polling center does secure my vote to be counted.

In near future, people can cast the ballot on internet and election office has to send voter ID number in mail with few confirmation numbers to prevent vote fraud.
