Acoustic Characteristics of the Speech of Young Cochlear Implant Users

I just got off the phone with her and asked her about if she tried to get help for me in the Deaf community. She said that before we moved to rural GA we lived in upstate New York. She said she did seek out the help and they told her I was not deaf enough. So I guess everyone turned their back on my mom and I.

Everyone? Why am I having trouble believing this? and why are you blaming the WHOLE Deaf community cause there's just no way all of them would turned their backs on you or your mother....I'm sorry but, this doesnt sound right to me...

You told me to clean up my act, I asked how. It is not a disagreement or even a debate here. I feel attacked.

Yep, you asked, and I told you. Would you like me to give you the exact number of the posts in which you engaged in such behavior?

It was 35 years ago. I can see what you are saying, but how do you think my mother felt? She is running me from doctor to audie or center and no one would help me. I do remember going to doctors all the time for hearing test. We moved a few times in order to find the best schools, but again no help. I did get speech for a year, that's it. Until Voc Reh helped me my senior year of high school and some of college.

U still havent answered my question. Who "turned" their backs on your mom. Administrators of the Deaf schools or programs or Deaf people themselves?

I can understand how your mom felt but when I was referring to the Deaf community being known for welcoming parents who seek out help, I was referring just Deaf people themselves not any "experts" who work in Deaf education. Now, I am sure things are better with the Deaf schools in helping parents out but u said "everyone" turned your backs on your mom and you. That made me confused...

Then can you explain the Oh, puhleeze comment?

Funny, you expect me to answer all of your questions, but you convieniently ignore the questions put to you.

It was my reaction to your bringing up an issue that happened 35 years ago and attempting to attribute it to a community now.

Especially since I've never known the deaf community to turn their back on a deaf child. In fact, when they speak out for the rights of a deaf child, they are slammed and told they don't know what they are talking about.

Also, you said everyone so if your mom went to a few people for help and they didnt help her out, why are u blaming the whole Deaf community? I was rejected by the Deaf community at first when I started learning ASL but I didnt give up cuz I knew that there had to be smarter and more open minded people in the Deaf community and sure enough, I found them. The hearing community has the same exact close-minded people in it too. U just cannot blame a whole community.

I absolutely agreed!

I never said I blame the whole Deaf Community. I stated that my mom went for assistance from everyone - doctors, audies, schools. She did not get it. Why is that so hard to believe. The only reason I got my first HA was because the man was out to make money, that's it.

Right...20 or so years ago must have been a different time for the Deaf community. Like Rick said that they called him and his daughter names ..well, the CI thing was new 20 years ago and of course people were threatened by another attempt to "fix" deaf people. However, I still think those who called Rick and his daughter those words were wrong and I hope those people today have opened up their minds about CIs. If they didnt, their loss.

Yes, of course, there will be people who consider implanting children as a form of child abuse but that doesnt mean EVERYONE in the Deaf community should be held accountable!

Few of them did that to Cheri and I because we didn't attend deaf schools, and we grew up oral, didn't know signs until late, they turned their back on us, while the others didn't...

She did not go into detail. It was 35 years ago. I will not put words in my mom's mouth. The everyone I am talking about are the doctors, audies and schools. The doctors said nerve damage and HA will not work, the audies who kept testing and did not fit for HA, schools put me in the back of the room to hid me, and the assistance my mom was looking for.

There you go, valee. First you said Deaf community, then you say audis, doctors, and schools. Which is it?

Ok ..u said schools so as a teacher for a Deaf school, I believe that the administrators were following a policy set by the state or county on what dB level the child should have before being accepted. Your dB level probably didnt meet the critera so if that was the case, then it wasnt anything personal and the Deaf community is not responsible for that cuz most of these policies were set by hearing people themselves. So, in reality, your mom was turned away by hearing people if u think about it. I still dont condone it but times are different now..it took a long and difficult journey for Deaf education to progress to where it is now.

What schools? The public schools or the Deaf schools? I am assuming the public schools since according to your other post, it sounded like u werent accepted into the Deaf schools due to your level of heairng loss. Correct me if I am wrong.

I do feel this is an attack because I don't agree with your points. I don't feel you are giving me anything to show support or assist in changing my mind.

Now Shel has made valuable points. I appreciate the way she discussing it.

Any what made you so much against the oral community?

The contradictions abound! It is truly astounding.

If it's not the whole Deaf Community, then who turned their back from you and your mother? Are you taking about doctors, audies, school that turned their back? and who said you weren't deaf enough?...*confused*

Go back and answer the numerous questions I have asked you, and I will deign to answer the questions you ask me. This is not a dodge, as I have stated the reasons I am opposed to an oral only environment numerous times. And I will gladly do so agian. But it is time for you to start answering the questions posed to you.

And feelings have nothing to do with reality.

And, if you will go back to post #433, and read forward, you will see where the attacks originated.

I did go to public school. I guess I did not qualify for Deaf Schools. I'm sure that is what mom was discussing. There was no HOH classroom at least from what I understand from mom. They did have a self-contained class for disabilites. I remember mom discussing that they wanted me to be in a class for severe disabilities because they did not offer anything else. Mom said she just has a hearing loss she can learn, and expected them to teach me.

They all did.

They all did.

Who is all? Doctors, audis, and public schools are not a part of the Deaf Community. When you speak of the Deaf Community it refers to the signing deaf individuals. If they were not consulted, how is it exactly that they turned their back on you?
