But now.....I think I do want to learn ASL to further integrate myself back into the deaf community I had left so many years ago :P Jiro is helping me along with that process. <3 ^_^

I like your approach. Don't think it (learning ASL) has to be something you need to do because you have no other option (there are so many), but rather something you choose to do to expand your communication options.

Just because someone says "Oh, I could never afford that," it doesn't imply the person doesn't want it-- just means she or he is suggesting another person should buy it FOR them.

Does it work? Oh I could never afford a new upgrade :) JK!

And even though people CONSTANTLY complain that people are arguing against it, I have yet to see someone try to talk someone out of learning ASL.

I've seen some negative tone regarding ASL.... from these who preach about CI and AVT... sooo..

It's not about "talking someone out of ASL" as much as the image of ASL being belittled that gets to people...

ie: 1:35-70 That was pretty negative...

Why in the world did this discussion turn towards language? It has no bearing on the topic of cures! I think some in here just like to spew things to aggravate others for no apparent reason. This topic was about CURES CURES CURES,,,,,, nothing to do with ASL or oralisim whatsoever. If language was a cure then we would not even have this topic. Ugh

This topic was ludicrous to begin with, that's why. It SHOULDN'T BE about curing deafness. It should be about giving the deaf child/person the tools to live life. ASL should be part and parcel of that.

because the only reason people don't feel the need for cure is because they already have an accessible language.

LOVE IT!!!

Like this blog I read: The ASL-Cochlear Implant Community: Does It Have To Be Either/Or?

Just because someone chooses to learn ASL does not mean that they "failed" at spoken language or that CI's don't work. Can't they want to communicate in several ways with several groups of people?

In a roundabout way, ASL is a cure. :P

If you were to think abstractly that is...

If it was a cure then it would be the end all be all. There would not be sooooo many different options for communication for the (D)deaf population.

Well, if you think about it-- medical devices, or rather technology in general, are designed to gear toward singularity. So it's not really "sooooo many different options" for the d/Deaf, but rather for the mainstream.

To be honest, singularity is killing the human race. Every girl is expected to look a certain way, every guy is expected to be a certain height. Everyone is expected to know how to use the same cellphone. Everyone is expected to speak the same language. Everyone is expected to own the same ideal dog.

I means we are deliberately narrowing down our gene pools to weed out the ones correlated with diseases and undesirable traits by screening for them... when we need those genes for when our environment changes.

I don't want to appear as if I am against either form of communication. I just don't see the point in argueing over who is right or who is wrong over what form they choose to use for themselves or their child or for anyone else for that matter. We are different people with different brains,lifestyles... What works well for you may very well not work for someone else so bantering over it doesn't help anyone.

What else would we do with our spare time?
