I can top that; even. Flexible Endoscopic Sinus Surgery for polyp removal and chronic sinusitis that the antibiotics I had been on couldn't reach due to the polyps that were lodged way up in there. It truly was one of the most painful surgical experiences I've had in recent memory. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy!

I had packing for a week. I'll stop there. There was parts of this surgery that was absolutely gross.

It is for me.

I agree with PFH.

If every deaf person had access to sign language then deafness would need no 'cure'. No need to be oral, no need to have hearing aids, no need for CIs, no need for any 'fix it' equipments.

If they want the equipment it should be their own choice in addition to sign language for their own convenience just as other equipment are like TTYs, Strobe Lights, Vibrator Alerts etc. But certainly not for the convenience of conforming to the majority who are not deaf.

How many oral-deaf would say the same as me? - that to use speech takes conscious effort, is exhausting and strains the throat to the point of hurting? I know quite a number already share my sentinent.

How many oral-deaf would honestly say that it does not affect them in the least?

Good question. I'm sure there are a few, but a very, very few.

It should be about giving the deaf child/person the tools to live life. ASL should be part and parcel of that.
And don't forget about hoh kids too!!!!
Faire joure, kids who have spoken language therapy have speech therapy. It's not articualtion/mecanics of speech, no. But it is STILL speech therapy!

Except, as pertains to the deaf, we know the numbers are skewed because of oralism...hope I understood, Souggy.

That's one way of looking at it.

Why in the world did this discussion turn towards language? It has no bearing on the topic of cures! I think some in here just like to spew things to aggravate others for no apparent reason. This topic was about CURES CURES CURES,,,,,, nothing to do with ASL or oralisim whatsoever. If language was a cure then we would not even have this topic. Ugh
Many of the threads about other things end up this way. It's what makes me think sometimes with certian people, there is an underlying agenda.

Pertinent comment-to say the least-Rockdrummer.

I believe the argument against oralism is relevant to the topic. Oralism is mostly projected as a 'cure' for deafness because it portrays the deaf person to be as 'normal' as possible to the hearing world. We are saying that it is not a 'cure' (neither can any man-made contraption could ever be a cure, only an assistive device but not a cure.) Also, having the access to sign language means there is no need for a 'cure'. So all that has been discussed and debated here has indeed been relevant to the topic of the thread.
