What is Your Pet Peeve?

That's OK. You don't have to reply me today but please reply other ad'ers first before me. This can wait! (It's no big deal.) Thanks!
I hope you got a good sleep this morning but unforunately for me, no... I was not able to sleep. Jeez...

good morning sosie! <smile>

being unable to sleep is another pet peeve of mine. i've been having trouble sleeping over the past few days, so i know what you're going through. (i normally have trouble sleeping when i'm manic due to bipolar, but that wasn't the cause of my sleeplessness this time around.) i finally "crashed" yesterday afternoon and fell asleep again last night around 2 AM my time. LOL!

a *major* pet peeve of mine are people who wear way too much cologne or perfume.

My pet peeve are the high costs of food and diapers. :rifle:

Next pet peeve - people that insist you being friends on Facebook when you have made it clear outside facebook that you do not wish to be friends, period. (My crazy ex-coworker just resent a friend confirmation I declined 3 days ago.....)

Ouch!

dixie,

i'm not familiar with facebook as i've never used it before, but is there a way to permanently block friend requests according to the sender's e-mail address?

People who think "disabled" people can't or shouldn't do anything. This happened to me today. Today I went skiing (I'm in Austria) and I was in the gondola. These two women and a man got in, and the first thing the woman did was scream to the man was "Didn't you see that sign! You're clearly not allowed to go on this part with skis!" Then he just said "Sorry I'm blind" and she said "Well then maybe you shouldn't be on the slopes!" Then he didn't say anything. So then she was like "and you're not even blind--you're wearing glasses!" Blah. So I didn't want to get in the argument in the gondola with this woman, especially not over whether someone is really blind or not, so at the end I finally calmly said "Just so you know, blind people can ski" and she said "well that man's not blind!" and then I told her (also calmly even though I was boiling on the inside, last thing I need to do is let people think we're all angry) "you don't know if someone's not blind or not. Blind people doesn't always look blind." (She didn't notice I was either.) She repeated "That man wasn't blind! He was wearing glasses!" And she got really mad and just stormed away.

Nika, it's unfortunate that some people are inflicted with the worst disability... ignorance.

Tsk to that woman.

I try to take those moments to educate but some people are just not open to it. By the way that is a really good line. Can I quote you on that? Ignorance is the worst disability.

that experience would have really frustrated me -- and i know exactly what you mean about trying to explain to people about what blindness does or doesn't "look" like as i have many friends who are legally blind.

off-topic...

where do you go downhill skiing? do you go as part of a blind activities group? i also love to go downhill skiing and participate in a group called BOLD (blind outdoor leisure development) -- a local activity group for the blind that has all kinds of indoor and outdoor recreational activities for the blind including downhill skiing (which doesn't begin until january).

Oh sure thing, go right ahead.

I use that in my philosophy for life when I deal with people who treat me with ignorance. I tell myself they are worst off than me.

Yeah, I had to use every ounce of self control not to curse that woman out.
where do you go downhill skiing?
I am with my family. We go to Austria twice a year--Kaprun. I follow behind my dad very closely, listening to his turns and following them.

I didn't realize they have groups for blind skiers. I'll check out the one you mentioned. Thanks for mentioning it!

i'd LOVE to go skiing in austria someday. lucky you! <big smile>

by the way, my hearing has never been good enough to follow the sound of someone's skis, so i use a ski guide who verbally tells me which way to turn. prior to receiving my ci's, i used a rope that was connected to my ski guide and i and felt the rope in order to know which turns i should make.

have a great trip!

The following the skier technique only works when there are few people on the mountain, even with excellent hearing. Once the Christmas rush hits then I don't go skiing anymore. I guess I could do the rope thing, but I just don't like having to deal with people, especially people like that woman today. So I just stay home or go for a hike. <smile>

i can understand that. i love to downhill ski so much that i don't mind dealing with people. being able to ski makes dealing with people worth it. besides, i'm fortunate that alot of people who ski at the resort our blind activity group goes to know us because we've been skiing there for many, many years. by the way, now that i have ci's, i no longer use a rope with my ski guide. he or she just tells me which way to turn. i'm able to tell which way to go obviously by what they say as well as how they emphasize their words. for example, if they say, "right turn!," (dragging the word "right" out), i know it means to make a wide right turn, but if they say something like, "left turn!," i know it means to make an abrupt left turn.

my pet peeve are people who drive too fast, slam on their brakes and run through yellow traffic lights.

Sounds like what I go through with people telling me that I cant be deaf cuz I can speak so well. Some people need to take some sensitivity lessons!

I hate when I ask "what?" or "can you repeat that?" or something to that nature and their response is "You heard me" or "I didn't stutter", hello people I have hearing aids clearly visible on both sides of my head and I always tell people before I even speak to look at me when they talk due to my hearing loss so it will help me understand what they are saying.

as mentioned in my "ask me anything" thread, one of my pet peeves are cab drivers who cheat their customers (especially blind or deafblind customers).
