What is Your Pet Peeve?

Here's my other two pet peeves:
1.) Two months ago, I went to the new dentist's office for my teeth cleaning. (My old dentist just retired. I know him more than 25 years. He was a good dentist. I will miss him... *sigh*) When my teeth cleaning was over and I went to see the new assistant for another appointment. She asked me if I need a ride. I said no, I can drive. She was surprised and said that she thought all deaf people can't drive, etc. I said yes, all deaf people can drive, can work, etc. She asked me if I work. I said yes and showed her my badge. She was surprised again. Duh...

2.) Deaf people wanted to know how much money I make? I told them that I am sorry that I don't feel comfortable to talk about my salary. Grrrrrrr...

I said no, I can drive. She was surprised and said that she thought all deaf people can't drive, etc.

Same here! Once when I was at the DMV there were some people signing and everyone around them was flipping out thinking they can't drive. I think it comes from that overall confusion people get with deafness and blindness. For example Marlee Matlin said that once when she was on a plane and told the flight attendant she's Deaf, the flight attendant brought her a braille menu. <laugh> I don't know why people confuse the two, but they do.

One of my pet peeves is whenever I bump into a friend at a store, The first thing they will say is "Did you hear.... blah blah blah."

I'm like "Uh, Why are you asking me this? Don't you have anything better to talk about other than passing around the rumors?"

Same here... I said the same thing to deaf people when I bump into them, that shut their mouth shut up and walk away and keep my chin up.... People always gossip this or that since it's a small deaf community... (In fact, we know each other). :ugh:

Good morning, Hear Again, sorry for not replying you the other day. I mentioned earlier in other thread. So, you will know. Smile! *wink*

LOL... I am sorry to hear that you were not able to sleep for the past few days but I am glad that you finally got a good sleep! Smile! (I was not able to sleep well for the past week as well... Now, I am more relaxed... )

I am sorry to tell you and other ad'ers about deafblind's rides, etc but that's my pet peeves. I was so frustrated because I can't stand to see them being left alone in the strange town, etc.. I feel like that I want to give the cab driver a black eye when I see him...

Me, too, people who wear way tooooo much cologne or perfume that gives me a headache. I can't stand the strong smell. Argh!!!

hi sosie,

i'm writing this after spending all night awake. (i saw a new psychiatrist and he says i'm manic which explains why i've been unable to sleep).

at any rate, yes, cab drivers who deliberately drop off deafblind (and blind) people off on the other side of town are a *major* pet peeve of mine. i'm so fortunate that nothing like that has ever happened to me, but as i mentioned in the other thread, it did happen to another totally deafblind man who used to live in my neighborhood years ago. there's simply NO excuse for that kind of behavior and i think cab drivers who do this kind of thing ought to be fired permanently.

i know what you mean about alot of cologne and perfume causing you headaches. the same thing happens to me. i end up getting severe migraines because of it (they are one of many triggers for my migraines). :(

sosie,

believe me, the blind community also gossips -- and depending on where you live, it can be a BIG problem. i haven't noticed this so much in my local deafblind community, but i know we gossip too.

Oh, no... you, too. What stupid people!!! I went through the same thing. I remember a few years ago, I was a Provider to work with a deafblind and we went to a new restaurant and the hostess gave us the braille menus. I told her that I am not blind. She apologize and gave me a regular menu. (Of course, I told my consumer all about it and she was laughing so hard, she thought it was funny... and saying that I can join her to her club!!!)

Or those name combinations they have for couples, like "Bennifer" for Ben and Jennifer.

so *that's* what that means! i kept hearing that on soapnet, but never understood what it meant because i don't watch whatever soap has ben and jennifer as a couple.

Hi Hear Again, sorry to hear that. It sounds like to me that you must be worried over something. That's why you have been unable to sleep for the past days. Maybe I'd be wrong but you said it's manic. I hope your new psychiatrist will give you some proper treatments and so, you can lead normal live. :dunno: Yes, I agree with you that cab drivers who should get fired immediately after the incidents and so, they can not work again as cab drivers in the future...

Yeah, it gives me a headache. Of course, I told them not to use too much cologne and perfume when they visit me, which they did. They do respect me but some others don't respect me. I have to stay away from them as much as I can. Sorry to hear that. I understand what you went thru.

Yes, I know that blind community gossips, and so does deaf community gossips as well. Nothing new... That reminds me of soap opera (even movie stars)... they gossip, too because they are just actors and actresses... Who cares?!

no, i'm not worried about anything. mania is a part of having bipolar. i have what is called rapid cycling bipolar I which means that my moods change rapidly from hour to hour and from what i've been told, it's very difficult to treat (you can also learn about mania and the different kinds of bipolar by clicking on the links in my signature). the new psychiatrist i saw yesterday said he is going to do everything he can to get me to feeling as close to "normal" as possible and is willing to work with me to do whatever is necessary to make that happen. i've been told i will always have problems with rapid cycling even when on meds, but we're trying to get my moods to the point where i'm not constantly cycling between mania, depression and anger every hour. at this point, i'll take any relief i can get!

thanks for the hug! *hugs back* i feel the same way about people who don't respect my request not to smoke in my apartment or to smoke a good distance away from me. oh well!

sorry for the off-topic post about my bipolar.

my first pet peeve are people who use an expletive in just about every other sentence they say. can't they think of other ways to express themselves?

my second pet peeve are people who start talking about or to my guide dog and don't say anything to me!

my third pet peeve are telemarkers who call me just as i'm walking through the door, so just when i run through my apartment to catch the phone before it stops ringing, that's when i discover it's a telemarketer. <mad>

I guess I am still learning about your condition. OK, I will read about manic depression and all the different kinds of bipolars when I am in the plane, that will keep me busy. Good, I am glad to hear that your new psychiatrist is going to do everything to help you. Let us know how is your progress going, OK? I know that it will not happen overnight but it takes time.

You are welcome! Sorry to hear that. You have a right to tell them not to smoke in your apt since you live there. You can put up NO Smoking signs on your front door and inside of your apt... That's a suggestion. :D Same thing with me. Let me tell you a story about smoking issue. I wrote "George", the property manager a letter about smoking issue last year and again, a few months ago. Well, I have a problem with the next-door neighbor who is a heavy smoker but she is puffing a cigarette, not inhaling. Yes, you heard me. That's what she told me and the other neighbor. That makes me so mad because her smoking still bothers me a great deal because of my health and also, I don't want to get cancer from a second-hand smoker. (I had a surgery to have my partial thyroid glands removed 8 months ago. My sister got a call from the office to let me know that the pathology report's back and it's good. I do NOT have cancer. The report was "begin". That is good news!!!)
I have a constitutional rights not to inhale someone's smokes while the next door neighbor is puffing a cigarette. (Even, she's puffing a cigarette at the weeing hours while I am sleeping. Argh..) That's not right. Of course, I have complained it to City of Hall and the property manager a numerous times and they said there's nothing they can do about it because the next-door neighbor has a right to smoke in her unit and also there's nothing against the law. (The property said he has spoke with the vent/duct company two years ago on the smoking problem at my unit and they said that there is really nothing that can be done either through them or through the property because the smell can come through any spot in my home, such as outlets, plumbing fixtures, anywhere that air can pass through. They also said that the walls are impossible to 100% seal.
Again, I have a constitutional rights NOT to inhale someone's smokes. I found this very frustrating!!!!

we went to a new restaurant and the hostess gave us the braille menus.
<jawdrop> They have braille menus? I've never gone to a restaurant that had braille menus before! Where is this place?

my second pet peeve are people who start talking about or to my guide dog and don't say anything to me!

That's one of the reasons I'm not getting a guide dog. I would not be able to put up with that! Even with a cane people just see "blind person."

I'm sorry to hear that, Sosie. <frown> I can totally understand. I have an allergic reaction to smoke too... it induces migraines for me.

By the way, don't move to Russia. Or a lot of other European countries for that matter. When I lived in Russia, the people I lived with smoked, so I would go hide in my bedroom and open the window for some fresh air. But then there would be more smoke! I thought, how is there smoke coming from outside? Turned out my neighbor would literally smoke into my bedroom window. (The way the building is set up your neighbor's window is literally feet from yours.)

No escape!

i can understand that, but i really enjoy using a guide dog, so i'll probably continue to use them even though people talking to my dog instead of me really frustrates me. i know that's part of having a dog, but still...

my pet peeve are online journal articles i must pay for in order to read them in their entirety.

People that express their anger by criticizing everyone around them.
