What is it so bad about CI?

Just about any Student in Gally with a hearing aid was labeled a wannabe hearing person and a form of discrimination/or say "prejudice" was at an all time high against those that were oral, new signers,HOH,CI,or mainstreamed that went to school there and wanted to learn more about being deaf they never had before.
Indeed......and that was twenty years ago! Now its common to see Gally kids with hair colors to match their hearing aid color..........

I can't help but wonder why is it so bad about CI?
What about it that considered an threat to Deaf Communty/Culture/Identity?
How is it different than hearing aid?
Why can't you be deaf and have CI? Why it have to be "you got ci? Ur not deaf anymore" or something that implied that we were trying to fix our hearing or to try to be hearing?
There's a lot of questions running around in my head. But I'll start with basics to see and maybe I'll understand or still confused about why CI is such a controversy and that it has to be single sided. And I see it all time "I don't need CI I'm proud to be deaf" or "I don't need CI I'm proud to be deaf and hearing aid is good enough" or anything related to it like it somehow cancel out the deafness in some sort.
Well please submit your opinion, explaination or whatever that might help me understand better.

And please be respectful in this thread and stay in calm manner to keep this from spinning out of control. :)

Peer pressure. The need for the mob to control your thoughts will always be there.

True friends wouldn't say things like you'r enot deaf enough or whatever. If they want to be proud and deaf that's their choice, I don't get it but then I don't have to live with the hearing loss to that extent any longer. I'm happy with my choice and evidently they're happy with theirs. to each their own.

So Skullchick, Live laugh and love and enjoy hearing. Just as those who choose not to take advantage should just live laugh and love and enjoy the choice that they make.

I wish you luck on your journey into hearing hopefully much better then you've ever heard before. :)

dont understand at all

:eek3:Ok well this is all weird 2 me .... I lost my hearing in nov. 07 2 meningitis 100% and they put me on the fast track 2 CIs in both ears I think I was blessed 2 be able 2 get them ... they turn them on 2 day at 1 pm ... But I understand my case is different... I come from the hearing world and was a singer in a group in minneapolis and thats how I made my living... but dont understand why CI's are so bad .... I will always be deaf If I take them off I wont be able 2 hear 2 me its just like a HA but on the inside.... so please explain 2 me why this is.... Thankyou Stewart Olerich MPLS...

God I'm so lost now It's one thing 2 B Gay and now deaf and Gay it sounds deaf peeps will hate me or somthing cause I got CI's Is a CI like being Gay you are hated cause of it?? I really thought our world has come farther than that ... So someone please tell me different!!!

Having always been hearing you probably havent been involved in the deaf world so unless you go looking for them you wont come across those people who diss CI. There are always going to be people who hate other for no good reason, just ignore them and get on with enjoying life.

Maybe placing more focus on how you see yourself rather than how others see you will help. Being comfortable with who you are will attract others that appreciate your individuality.;)

CI isn't 100% to working as well! Just little bit better.. no difference. Just like hearing aid.

CI is very limited for outdoor/swimming for deep like scuba diving. Hearing aid is unlimited and itself can get off and on.

CI is very risk.

I'm not here to blunt... I just feel not comfy about CI... They are not great! Really.... I have a friend. She is very UPSET. When she was little girl her parents put her thru CI etc til she become 18 yrs. She told them that dont want to be CI! ! Now she blame on her parents. It is about parents's wish.. not children's wish!I rather children's wish instead of parents's wish!!!!!!!!! whenever they are 18 yrs old and they can decide want be CI or not. Instead of put them when they little... POOR! They just need a childhood instead of CI suffer thru.

One number is Dr don't care about people's health! Mostly Dr care about is money! Thats all for their job.. PERIOD!

Where did you get your information that leads you to the conclusion that cochlear implants are "just like" hearing aids? I strongly disagree.

Are you only against ones that would go in your body? Only against ones that modify a bodily function?

Please do not make generalizations about CIs. I am a lifetime HA wearer and a CI wearer. My personal experience is that a CI is nothing like a Hearing Aid.

It may upset you about a CI, it upset me when judgement is passed on CIs based on false information. Negative posting just burn the bridges between all members of the Deaf Community. Stop burning the bridges.

You can't swim with a hearing aid.

The statement about doctors also can't agree with. My doctor was the kindest and most knowledgable doctor I have ever been too.

Thank you - you echoed exactly what I was thinking when I read the very INCORRECT and MISLEADING post she made. Of course she's entitled to her opinion about CI's, but disseminating false information isn't going to help anybody. Glad you and Drew's Dad pointed that out.

Everyone will have different opinions about CIs..why does it become personal? Important that you are happy and living your life the way you want to. If others hate CIS or the idea of it, they are entitled to their opinions too. It is obvious that the CIs made you who have them happy so why get upset what other people say? I am just wondering..not an attack on u all.

We are all adults and we will face people who dont like what we do or what we have. I have faced discrimination from people who are against interracial marriages (I am white, my hubby is black) but screw them! I am the one who is living a happy life as a married woman to my hubby. :)

It is personal. It is not the generalization part. I'm use to that negative comments.
I am in an interracial marriage too. Been married for 18 1/2 years. We have not been discrimanted except by my father and stepmom. I don't care what they say about me, but I do have a child. My child will not be around that.

I am a realistic person and there are many people in this world that pass false judgement on you. Sometimes I just take it and go on, other times like today I'm tired of it. I'm tired of the false information and generalizations. And sometimes you just have to say something.

I think Shel's right. I think all we need to do is correct any misinformation and leave it at that. People have an opinion about anything and everything. They don't call it 2 cents for nothing! I was on a website the other day where people were arguing that sportsmen like Tiger Woods, Lewis Hamilton (formula 1) etc weren't black because they had one parent that was not black. That sounds familiar! So yes you really get the extreme viewpoints in every group you are in.

I can see your point and I am the same in a way when people make generalizations about Deaf schools and teachers there as dumbing down the curriculm. It is a sensitive issue with me cuz we all work soo hard to ensure that our students develop higher literacy skills but it is hard when so many of them come to our schools so delayed. *sighs* I can undy where u are coming from. Smile

Some Deaf people feel threatened by the implants, as they think this will cause the Deaf culture to get smaller and smaller and perhaps disappear altogether. I myself don't see that happening. The CI is not going to make the deaf 100% hearing. Turn the processor off, and you're deaf again. A CI doesn't make a deaf person hearing, but some might think that? I don't know. It confuses me too. Some CI users still continue to use ASL/sign language, and others do not. Everyone's different in their own ways, in the ways they were brought up and of their own knowledge and opinions. But no matter what, I think there will always be deaf people around for a long time. Deaf with CI, deaf with hearing aids or Deaf, they're everywhere right now, and this will last for who knows how long (never knowing what science is going to do with the whole cell regeneration and trying to cure deafness).

Thank Shel.

I understand about generalizations about schools too. My school ranks up with inner city schools - 70% free or reduce lunch, single parent households, abuse at home, gang violence and etc.... That does not stop me from going in each day and trying to make a differences, the same as you. We don't dumbdown the curriculum or take a break. We teach...keep teaching...they are learning...it takes years for us to see the differences. We only have 180 days.

So off to work we go...... :)

Some posters here seems to be so biased they make up things and gets it wrong while reading your post. You are right scuba diving and CI don't goes well along due to the 90 feet limit. With HA, you can just leave it on the boat or shore, and go as deep your skills and gas mix allows you.

Imagine Matt Hamill, the UFC fighter wearing an implant, with all the fighting in UFC, doubt doctors would okay that. He would look like a moron with a helmet, while every one else don't wear helmets.. I also read somewhere that he "hates CI", dunno if that's true.

I have also been told that people gets a lot out of their HA's, especially the new ones coming out last year and this year, and claims that they aren't far from CI. It's strange some people here are upset by some deaf people claiming this.. Wonder why they get so upset? Perhaps they don't know many adult deaf people who tries out different HAs and talk to other CI'ers?

Deaf people pissed off because they was implanted and got too much oral attention are everywhere. In this forum those stories are either making some posters upset or they try to ignore those stories.:dunno:

Problems with doctors have been dicussed here before, and everyone knows of those doctors. A lot of doctors for sure gives bad impressions to a lot of deaf people. Thanks for the reminder :)

Great post!
