What are you thinking about? Part IV

Why not outlaw recessions instead? My internship was with Washington School for the Deaf, which is a state agency. Because of the recession's impact on the state budget, there wasn't money to pay me. I am sure that holds true for many businesses as well. If times were better, perhaps there would be more paid internships and everyone would be happy with that.

can't even offer ANYTHING else beside money? that's just sad.

Whatever, jiro. I guess some people are grateful for the experience that makes them proficient in their careers and are thankful there are those that agree to mentor, and then there are those that think that they are experts just because they've spent a little time in a classroom.

My mentor compensated me with lunch and LOC :)

I'm thankful of that. It got me to where I am now. Just because I can put something on my resume doesn't mean I'll land a good job. My mentor did more than that. He had a talk with my boss, wrote an excellent LOC, and guided me when I needed an advice.

A learning experience? I am sure you understand the principle of getting what you put into something. The more you put into certain things; the more your reward will be. Sometimes it is monetary and sometimes not.

damn Dixie. what a miserable hell that no one should go thru. I'd exchange my place with yours and give him a hell

Thanks, but right now I'm just to the breaking point seems like. I need to grow some balls and move the fuck out, only thing is I don't think my finances will be stable enough. (I'll be out of work for 4-5 weeks in the fall due to the chickens being out, won't be able to draw unemployment for that time.) Now I'm just really hoping, wishing, and praying something good will come along.

I feel sorry for unemployed college students especially Ivy Leaguers :)

They do offer something besides money. That is what we keep telling you.

yea yea "a job opportunity" in the future.

"hey - I've got available spot for internship. It's unpaid but hey - you'll get a good job opportunity in return." IMO - that sounds quite pompous to me.

I don't work like that. Do you?

I'm neither of those. Your point?

You've done unpaid internship and got a job.
I've done paid internship and got a job.

Both of our belief is different.

Now I ask this question to those who is fine with the concept of unpaid internship. Would you offer unpaid internship to others? I've answered this question for myself - I can't because it's against my principle and moral. I would at least pay for intern's lunch or commuting cost.

What says you? :)

Unpaid internship at the camp would give room and board I imagine. So free living for a time period.

Nope. That isn't what I was talking about at all.

Unpaid internships are standard in my field. So yes. And I would be very selective regarding who I accepted as an intern. Do you even realize how people compete over these internships?

everybody competes for internship. Like I said, I just don't believe in "UNPAID" part. Of course I would be very selective in who I accept for internship but I ain't gonna make him/her work for me in exchange for nothing.

"Learning Experience" oh please!

It would depend on the success of the business.

It has nothing to do with principles or morals. Sometimes the things you want to do simply aren't feasible because of things out of your control--like the state of the economy.

A lunch isn't too valuable...I can make a sandwich for a couple of dollars worth of food. BFD.

Then, in most cases, you will not be receiving your degree because the only internships available are unpaid ones. Do you actually think it is better to spend 4-5 years earning a degree that you can't complete because you refuse to do a semester's worth of unpaid internship? Yeah, that's gonna look good on a resume.

Given the nature of fast food and some restaurants, I'd rather take my own lunch. I get paid now....and I still pack my own lunch.

But where will you be getting a couple dollars from? By interning for me, would it help if I offer to pay for your lunch everyday?

consider this - if my business isn't doing too well and I can't afford extra worker... then I would offer unpaid internship in exchange of "learning experience"

I managed to live and support myself and do unpaid internships. Most people do.

Depends on the field. "Learning experience" is a bullshit phrase, but nobody's gonna get a job in certain fields without relevant experience, and in some fields the only relevant experience you can get is via unpaid internships.

Sucks, but if employers can get away with free labor, they'll obviously do it.

Ha ha, sucks for those degrees, though - I did CompSci and my internships were all fair well paid. Cubicle culture has its downsides, but that's not one of them.
