What are you thinking about? Part IV

As for career change - I'm looking into USDA as a career choice. It's a comfortable living from what I've actually seen from inspectors. It's not rich, but it's not dirt poor either. You have everything you need and some of what you want. Ideal for me really salary wise.

Yea? What's the average pay do you know?

I could work for the government. With how I have been feeling about teaching lately, I wouldnt be surprised if I applied for a govt job in the future. However, my hubby and I may have plans this fall that may need me to have a 10 month job for a few more years.

Get on USAJobs.com and look at all the vacancies you could be eligible for, it doesn't hurt to look.

I did but I am not ready yet. Need to complete some family plans first before I can make a career change from a 10 month job to a 12 month job.

Not bad...I am sure in your state, that's very comfortable. In MD, it would be considered low.

It is a very comfortable living in my state where in my area the average income is $32,000/yr. The majority of people I know make $25,000 or less.

In MD, one would need to make at least $80K to live comfortably. Crazy!

Incredibly crazy. The cost of living here is low - have you considered moving someplace like here where your hubby could be transferred and still keep his current pay scale?

We refuse to move where there is no family. It is either MD or AZ.

He makes more than a VMO. Lucky. What is his agency?

What is a VMO?

Dept of the Secretary. He is damn lucky to have his job considering that he has no college degree.

VMO = Veterinary Medical Officer. They are generally GS-11/12. They are the ones that shut down entire poultry plants for non-compliance.

I would say so. Most anything above GS-11 a degree is required I am told but on the other hand the government offers online courses to complete degrees for all employees. This is part of the reason why I am considering USDA as a career choice if I can ever get hired.

What is your agency? I'm going on USDA-FSIS. I will be reapplying soon if I qualify for a position at Dardanelle.

Dept. of the Army... yep, I'm going to work for THE MAN.

My hubby is at GS-13

GS-13? That's good money, but yeah, not exactly a fortune in MD. I hope to get to GS 13 within a couple years. I should have started higher than GS-07 based on my education and experience. I even challenged the initial offer and showed them why I should have qualified for at least GS-09 or even GS-11, but they denied me and didn't offer any reason.

When I was searching for govt jobs, I discovered that I wouldnt start that high either despite having a Master's and experience. I would have to start around GS-7 or 8 BUT I would move up FAST...faster than my teaching job. I am still having that option in the back of my mind.

If we all get Gov't jobs as we hope to have in the future - we need to start an AD.GOV club, ADers that work for the federal gov't.

BTW - Based on poultry experience and education they say I could finish my degree online through the gov't and potentially move up fast.

Oh definitely, you would move up fast with a degree. My hubby said that if I got a govt job now, in 10 years I could be higher up in the ladder than he is because of my college degrees. Good point...
