USA is the second worst place to raise kids

Umm no, her son didn't get arrest, I just read Jazzy's post, and she saying that her son got caught by the police and the police gave him a ticket because he was not 18, and it cost her 450 bucks to pay the fine ( ticket )..

Personally to me, this is the FIRST time I ever heard of a police giving a fine to teenagers over smoking, I'll find out if my state does that too, ALL I know that the stores would get in huge trouble if they're being caught selling cigarettes or tobacco to under-age kids...

Btw Jazzy, mind if you post a link of a law about this please?

The Law

The minimum age required by law to legally purchase tobacco products is 18.
If a minor (someone under the legal age of 18) is caught using tobacco products the courts can fine $100.00.
If a store is caught selling tobacco products to underage teens the courts can fine $250 for a first time offense.
It is against the law for anyone over the age of 18 to smoke on school grounds.

Ohio Law

For Under-age smokers: The penalty can be a $100 fine, community service, smoking education programs, and even a suspension of their driver’s license.

Very interesting.....

I thought we raised our kids well. They come out great afterall.

I have seen some parents in England are good parents like you. I guess that link didn't say all is bad but "many" or "a lot".

I think what they were trying to say here, many children here in USA are living in poverty and most of them suffer because of it. I have seen enough here in my neighborhood, too many of them live in poor and they tend to get in trouble by steal other people's property. Some of them did not do well in school so they tend to kick them out of school and send them to bad kids school. Many kids goes to school hungry and they do not have time to eat free meals in the morning because of long line at lunch area. Heard some stories their teachers brought breads to classroom so those hungry kids can eat them and feel full. Sad.

I think it's no excuse to blame poverty how to cause parents and children like that. There're plenty of poverty in the world, not just America. I can see from your description that the children follow their parent's bad role.. like steal, etc. because they struggle with money. I have seen plenty of people who living in poverty are loving and understanding parents... They can teach their children about money why they can't afford etc. Many children from poor families turn into successful adult.

I see the point, you described is BLAME government for not improve children's education, development, healthy etc... Just send them to bad kids school which is no good because they didn't learn what good or bad... but affect their self-esteem and make them feel low and aggressive... If they have the problem with children then get the help instead of punish them to bad kids school etc. What you describe is really sad.

Why the parents want to have babies when they know they struggle with money which is unfair to let the children grew up like this?

I see no excuse to blame poverty to expose parents and children like this...

Then we have middle class, alike us we could not afford health insurance for my kids when we were running own business. They do not provide health insurance for all kids alike they do for the kids who are living in poverty.
Then we have laws here believe they are so rip off. For instance they caught my son smoking and gave him ticket because he was not even 18, he would be 18 in few months. It costed me about 450 bucks to pay the fine. Judge said he does not agree with it but the lawmakers are the one who want those money. I could not believe in my state mostly republicans want $$$ to cover other areas.

Really sad, that government is suppose to take care of their people's health issues.

I disagree with the law for ticket your son because he smoked under 18 years old. It's shop owner who is responsible for sell adult things to minor. Police suppose to ticket the shop owner, not your son. The law should be change and improve.... tell every shop owners to not sell adult things to minor and check minor's ID etc.

Then we have gangs, they wanted my son to join one of the gang and my son refused. Of course they threatened him but he was so strong and he busted their a%^ if they try to hurt him. It happened once and they got arrested for it. Many kids went to him for their own protection. My son was good kid and will to do anything to protect them. But thank God he graduated and do well with his own life nowdays. Pressures were so bad on those kids even on my boys, too.

Yes, I have seen the happened to some big cities like Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg, etc... The government fight to improve the children's development... and tried to stop it. It's not easy.

The reason I pick right place is village in countryside and right school and right atmopshere inside and outside where the children should grew up before move and live.

So I agree USA is worst place to raise kids nowdays.

It's sad, that you know from seen it. I also know from see it in England where I grew up... :(

I have seen that American children around here (I work for US Government) have different menatily as European children. British and American's mentality are different but I has to agree that British is the mainly worst.

Should we blame government for that?

Yes I agree with you on this. I always thought that Sweden, Denmark or Finnland is number one and then second to fifth place is Norway, Switerzland, Austria, Germany, Italy.... I'm total :jaw:

I have seen and disagree with Netherland's law, too. They sells drugs in the shop... They can smoke pots in the Cafe house. They allow to grew drugs/weed in their garden.

yes.. and maybe you know, they have all no limits for law. if i am pregnant for ready 5 month, but I dont want keep my baby for future. In Netherland can do aportion 1 month til 6 month babys. I dont like it.

I re- read Jazzy's post before quoted her post and have to give you right that it's not arrest but gave a ticket to Jazzy's son because of minor. Sorry  :Ohno:

:giggle: that's alright, I misunderstood sometimes too Liebling,

Yes that's right before they join EU Union, they change their limit.

That's why German follow Netherland's law to make prostitue legal few years ago. I will create a new thread about prostitue legal later.

Police do ticket the shop owners, when then catch them selling to minors. The problem is, they have to be caught in the act. That's hard to do. Sometimes they do "sting" operations to catch them (more often for underage alcohol sales). My daughter used to work in retail, and she told me that if a manager catches a clerk selling alcohol or tobacco to underage people, the clerk will be immediately fired. Most managers and owners don't want to risk breaking the law.

Of course, most underage teens can easily get tobacco products from people 18 years and older who buy the stuff for them. So you can't blame the stores for that.

I thought instead of ticketed the shop owners, I thought they'll arrested the seller of the store who sold a minor cigarettes.

:ugh3: ~ whoa... that huge so difference other countries law and compare their home country..

What make difference debate issues their laws.. as long not my problem their own problem... Yes I agree, out there are spoil brat rotten their children and almost everything what their wants... IT'S OUT OF CONTROL....

Strange low volume the other law.. *stunned surprise*~:eek3:

Have no idea somehow their country aren't standards charter rights!?

I agree that the USA is one of the worst places to raise my kids in. We lived on a Caribbean island before moving to the USA two years ago and I was more pleased with the life for the kids on the island than here in the USA.

Each state's laws are different.

Here's a chart where you can click on each state to read a brief description for that state's tobacco laws:

American Lung Association Action Network

I noticed that for SC state laws this chart said that clerk intervention was not legally required. However, I've noticed in all the convenience, grocery, and department stores (like Walmart), that I use, the cigarettes are out of reach of the customers, and that they have to request them from the clerks. So, even though the law doesn't require it, apparently the store owners and managers enforce that rule because they want to protect themselves.

My daughter told me that most of the clerks at her stores checked the ID's of people who looked under 30 years old, just to be safe. Sometimes the stores themselves send in "undercover" shoppers to test the clerks. If they get caught not checking an ID, they get fired.

Of course, there is really no way to stop an 18-year-old from buying cigarettes at a store, then re-selling them to his friends (for a profit). It's illegal but very hard to catch and enforce. Also, some parents don't mind buy tobacco for their children. I think it's insane (and I know it's illegal) but how can you control that? If the parents are that stupid, what can the law do? They can't send cigarette cops to every house to look for smoking teenagers. They can't send doctors to implant brains into the parents' heads.

:dunno:
