So, will the deaf culture be there?

YIKES, NO WAY!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't possible imagine terminating a pregnancy because of hearing loss, especially with all the things (ASL, CI's, whatever) that make hearing loss...dunno...what's the right word....manageable. Plus, tons of people with hearing loss (my kiddo included) are not genetically deaf, so what about them? (Though, I don't think I would be against improving medication to the point that there is no longer ototoxicity :dunno:)

You would never be against improving medication to the point that there is no longer ototoxcity.

Genetic screening is going to be a hotly tested issue in the next 10 to 20 years, I promise you that. I'm not saying that we should be like what Hitler wanted, a "perfect race" back in his time.

As a person who is disabled in a family with many disabilities, I want what is the best for them. However, I see a different future though, whether that is a possibility or not.

It is just an opinion, not a fact. So don't chop my head off.

Actually, how would you know what I would or wouldn't be against?

I'm sorry, I thought that you relied on lipreading, was I wrong?

They tried to train me to listen but after 5 years, I ended up relying on lipreading more than listening. However, I do notice that without my HAs, I cant lipread worth of s((* so obviously they did train me to listen with my HAs.

Gompers was called speech/language intervention school for the hearing impaired back in those days. The label has changed...

It looks like I have had already tarnished my reputation in AD. Hopefully you guys can get to know me better.

If I have had offended you, I sincerely apologize.

Tom

Ok, I accept your apology. Iam willing to start over with you because I automatically thought you were a troll to try to start trouble. Peace out. :)

The deaf culture will slowly die out with the increasingly new and effective technologies that will occur in the next 20 to 30 years or so. From genetic screening for couples to vastly improved hearing aids to possibly one day having stem cells (not from embryo's mind you, which arn't even that effective) helping us hear as normal people.

Overall, we should be happy about this. To me, it is better to be a part of a world becoming more tightly woven than become isolated in a small group of Deaf people. I don't mean any harm by that statement at all.

"The rest of those who have gone before us cannot steady the unrest of those to follow."
Deaf culture will never die because no matter what the technology there will always be those that it will not work on. Also as long as people are around and champion cultural preservation, it will remain.

Faire joure, it is SEMATICS. AVT IS hyperintense spoken language therapy. It falls under the agies (sp?) of speech therapy. A regular speech therapist doesn't just work with kids with articulation disorders. They also work with kids with LANGAUGE issues.
It still is VERY intense THERAPY and very intense training!
ChocolateMilk, I think people misunderstood your comment. I don't think you meant to say you're happy deaf culture may be threatened.
I also think it's a little too early to say what will or won't happen. Did you know that only a small percentage of hearing loss is genetic? Also, even WITH the advances in medicence , they stil have no clue how a lot of people went dhh. I also think you don't realize that it's not an either or thing. You can parcipitate in BOTH cultures and be a part of both worlds. Only a small percentage of dhh from childhood people are voice off. Many others can take advantage of both worlds.

No, it isn't semantics. Speech therapy focuses on speech (sounds), AV focuses on language.

No. ARTICULATION therapy is ONLY PART of speech therapy!!!! AVT is SPOKEN LANGAUGE therapy. You cannot practice spoken language without talking (making sounds) Yes, it doesn't have to be perfect, and it's not corrective articualtion therapy a la a regular speech therapist. But it is STILL therapy. It is STILL training.....it is STILL the language therapy many, if not most of us went through. Spoken language therapy for dhh kids is NOT new. Even I had it as a preschooler and I only had a hoh loss as a preschooler!
Do you not understand?

Actually, there are many people here who said that this is not how their therapy went. Also, therapy is a few hours a week, not all day everyday.

Everyone has different types of therapy. Everyone has different hours of it. Why do you insist on constantly picking a fight with us over it ?? OMG !!!

I'm not, I'm trying to explain things. People say things like "AV therapy isn't language" or "Oral schools are focused on speech all the time to the detriment of academics", why should I let crap like stand?

Word doesn't even exist.

No, you got lots to learn.

BOOM ROASTED...

I'm afraid you're the one who has a lot to learn and your attitude is not going to help any.

No, the word doesn't exist in the dictionary but it's widely used in the Deaf community. It's been coined by Tom Humperies if I recall correctly. I hope I have spelled his name correctly.

it denotes someone who thinks being being hearing is > than deaf and many think that they're more intellegent than the deaf as well and that we're the benighted ones.

Just because a word isn't defined in a dictionary doesn't means it's non-existent. All it means is the word is not commonly used enough to be considered as an entry.
