So, will the deaf culture be there?

I'd love to see what kind of a door is needed for this one.

Then why come to a deaf forum if you are against deafness?

BTW, I am deaf and I am not stupid. No, I am not Yale material but I am damn smart.

Did I blatantly say I was against deafness? No, not at all. I was simply stating the truth of what is to come. If you don't believe that, then keep living in never land.

You guys seem to think that I am implying that deaf people are not smart. That is not the case at all.

Look at your post about making everyone happy if Deaf culture ended. That speaks volumes.

Seriously, what is your deal? While I may or may not agree that someday there will not be a Deaf culture, why would you come to a Deaf forum and just start with that? Are you deaf? Why are you here?

Die out? That is sometimes associated with dwindle. Just look at some ancient American Indian languages. Some call it 'dying out' or 'dwindling'.

Deaf culture will always be around. I'm just saying it will be lessoned as future couples choose who their babies will be.

You did say it would make everyone happy. Dont deny it.

I'm HoH. I'm hear to meet other "deaf" people.

But apparently my opinion is not accepted in here. How nice

By making statements about Deaf culture the way you did, you are disprespecting a lot of people here.

Well, today it is EXACTLY the opposite. Articulation is the very last thing they worry about. Hearing children can not make all the appropriate sounds until they are around age 7, so why would a deaf child? They start developmentally appropriate. They start with noise making toys, and singing sounds and animal sounds, just like a baby. Then simple words and on and on. They don't focus on making perfect sounds, why would they? When a hearing child learns to talk, they make developmentally appropriate mistakes too. The key is understanding and then using language, "speech" comes much later.

Ok, if that is what you believe in, that's your right. I dont agree with it. Maybe it is best to leave it at that.

Well, it will be slightly better accepted because you are HOH from birth, but no, dissension from the majority is not tolerated. (That's why they despise me :D)

older Native American's weren't happy when their old language is dying and they wanted their young one's to take up on it. This has happened for thousands of years of when a new language is introduced and it slowly dies out.

In our global society, it is better to integrate than to be obsolete. In 10 to 20 years, people will choose genetic screening and if they (the couple) find out if their is a genetic defect, they might terminate. My parents had to choose whether they wanted their son to be learning ASL or learn to speak English. Thankfully, they chose English as I am more easily able to integrate with society. But even then, I have not been able to fully integrate.

Ok, if that is what you believe in, that's your right. I dont agree with it. Maybe it is best to leave it at that.

But I'm asking a very specific question that you are avoiding. Is this the kind of therapy you had growing up (language, not articulation based) and is it what you envision when you use the phrase "speech therapy".

Don't be silly. I adore you! You remind me of one of my rabble rousing daughters.

Plus you would never dissent in the direction of wishing deaf babies eliminated by genetic screening.

YIKES, NO WAY!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't possible imagine terminating a pregnancy because of hearing loss, especially with all the things (ASL, CI's, whatever) that make hearing loss...dunno...what's the right word....manageable. Plus, tons of people with hearing loss (my kiddo included) are not genetically deaf, so what about them? (Though, I don't think I would be against improving medication to the point that there is no longer ototoxicity :dunno:)

I had language therapy at Gompers...it was still called speech therapy but what you described was the same what I went through.
