Science or Spirituality...You Choose:

Christion Science people, from what I understand, do not give their children medications when they are ill. Instead they prey to the air. No science there.

Darwin was a Christian with fundamental DOUBTS about god.
Prey?

...Instead, I think that Free Thinkers should be erased and the phrase, Science Believers (or something similiar to that) might be better so as confusion of terms might not happen.
Science Believers? Ah, I get it. You are a believer in the religion of science! Science is your religion.

"Once Upon A True" has nothing to do with TODAY.

Actually the world's most notable scienctists KNOW that evolution is not a SCIENTIFIC theory (a scientific thoary is (ay all) the same as a simple everyday theory), buy a scientific FACT. Why? The genome evidence (volumes and volumes of undesuted factual data) says, without question, that evolution is indeed a straight-up FACT. This is the MODERN scientific perspective.

Forget about carbon data and all that because that old news. Today's news is different...much different. Evolution does not carry any doubts today...no any longer.
Does that give you peace of mind? Hope for the future? Encouragement? Joy?

What exactly do you get from your evolutionary beliefs?

even animals have spirits/souls...if not believe there other religions, just look at hindu, buddism, and so on...(i dont know what else but im sure theres plenty...)

That is EXACTLY what I was thinking.

Aquablue, I don't know if you realize this, but I am pretty sure that in your mind, you are trying to "be sensible" and have a discussion about science vs religion. Obviously, you dislike those religious people who are all about God, ignore science, and ram it down your throat. But what you don't see is that you are just like one of those religious people. Just go back to your posts and replace the word "science" with "religion" and you sound just like them. You are ramming it down our throats. Believe me, I've seen scientific people have discussions about religion, but some of your posts are not thought provoking questions, but rather along the lines of "Sigh, why do you even bother with silly ol' religion, the evidence is RIGHT THERE. Even the smartest people are atheists! Doesn't that tell you something?"

I know this question isn't for me, but these questions are exactly why I don't believe in God. It would be nice if I believed, I mean, it would be great to go to heaven, that someone "out there" is watching out for me, that I am not alone and so on. So even if I "believed", it wouldn't give me a peace of mind, hope for the future, etc. because.. deep inside, I do not believe.

We don't get "benefits" from believing in science as you do with religion, other than the satisfaction that it is "truth".

(PS, I am not saying that science is TRUE, just that we believe it to be true)

I'm curious. If you don't get peace of mind, hope for the future, encouragement, and joy from either religion or science, from what do you get them? In other words, what is your source for those things?

From enjoying life. I don't need a reward at the end to enjoy what I have now. I don't enjoy life simply by taking advantage of it (sex, drugs, rock n roll, etc). I do value morals and for me, being good simply comes from within. I don't need warnings nor the idea of a bonus at the end of my life to entice me to have morals, have hope for the future, encouragement, etc. Following the golden rule is rewarding and hopeful in itself, even with a lot of setbacks.

I can take this to PM land if others feel that this is getting too religious-y.

Life warms the cockles of my heart. For comparison purposes I have a cockle machine chuffing next to my window.

First of all, good question, Reba! And Daredevel, no, not too religious. What you are saying is true, and should be the way people live regardless of their beliefs about the end, or what happens when we die. I think that in obsessing about the past and worrying about the future, we miss what is going on RIGHT NOW, today!! And really, that is what is important, that is what life should be all about. Of course, easier to say than to do. Especially if you are raised up to believe that the big reward comes in the afterlife... but even if you believe in nothing, it is hard to live in the moment. I hope you really do have that kind of contentment. I strive for it, but have to admit, for me it has been hard to achieve. I think as I get older it gets easier, though.

+1

No matter what one's beliefs are, any goodness they do should come from the inside without the expectancy of anything in return.

I agree. Nobody should judge each other based on their beliefs.

That's how it is for me, as well.
