Questions and debates about blindness:

I switch between screen reader and magnification. For the forums, I usually keep track of a handful of threads that I'm interested in. And from there I just click on the "New posts" and also on the "View first unread." That way I can take off from where I left without reading through every post from page one.

Hear Again - do you use SPY page?

Hear Again - do you use SPY page?

Jiro,

HA asked me to answer on her behalf. She does not use SPY page. I assume it is because her vision loss is too great for it to be an assistance for her.

She didn't answer herslef because she has problems with rapid cycling due to her bi-polar diagnosis, and is taking a break from this thread because of it.

yike! i hope she feels better as soon as possible.

Do parents deal well with blindness? I know that a lot of Deaf people think their parents were (or still are) in denial about their needs and Deafness. Is it the same for the blind? Are medical professionals "obsessed" with residual vision, like they are with residual hearing?

What screen reader do the blind members here use, and do you have a preference?

very cool. Are you able to surf on all sites or are there some sites that you cannot surf around? If there are some sites you cannot surf around - explain why.

I use Zoomtext X16 and I also have a braille display. I have tried to use Braille on it's own but I found it very difficult so I switched back to Zoom and Braille.

Yes some sites are not possible for me to get about. I can't see well enough to see pictures or graphics.

One of the worse problems for me though are the visual verifications. You are supposed to read graphic print. Sometime you also have option of listening to a voice reading numbers over background noise. Neither is very helpful for deafblind people. So we have to ask a sighted person to read the visual verifications for us. If we really want to get into the site.

oh lord.... now that you mention it... that's going to be a problem for you since lot of sites/forums use some wacky picture with letters/numbers for you to type in when registering for an account. Even I cannot read it myself!! It usually takes me several tries! Yahoo's verification thing is the worst :mad2:

Some people keep mensioning that their are 3 blind and deafblind posters here. Actually their are 2 hearing blind: Nika and Typingtornado and

and 5 deafblind: Me, Hear again, Aleser, Mrs Bucket and Grayson Peddle.

Plus their are several others with ushers syndrome that are going blind: Pinky, Baby blue, Sexy porkie and several others. If I've missed you out You will have to come and identify yourself.

So definately more then 3.
