Questions and debates about blindness:

They (hearing/sighted people) get right up close to you? I am sighted, so does that include me? (Yet, you said deaf people make 3 foot circles around you.) So I must be somewhere in the middle. Not trying to be sarcastic here, but I think there's an element here that we're not understanding yet.

Hearing sighted people have no problem getting close to me and my cane.

I think one of the reasons some sighted-Deaf people fear blindness so strongly is because they rely that much more on their vision than hearing people so they can't imagine living without it.

Yeah, i know, the hearing people were from my asl class. lol.

If they were hearing people that already knew you, then maybe they didn't move because they were accustomed to you. :dunno: I'm just saying, you can't assume that all the people who moved away were deaf people, cuz there are always hearing people at deaf events, too. So you can't just automatically reach the conclusion that deaf people are afraid of blind people.

I'm not talking about people that know me, i'm talking about places like wal mart, verses deaf events.

Maybe people at deaf events are more diversity aware, and therefore make an attempt to be more considerate of another disability.

I don't know. I get the "stay a mile away treatment" from hearing and Deaf alike.

But I do know what you mean typeing in terms of Deaf folks being even more scared about blindness as a concept than hearing folks. (Generally speaking!)

Exactly, especially when they find that i am learning to sign, most people just dont understand.

I think the whole deaf people being afraid of blind people is a complete myth. You may have been in some unfortunate situations where someone went out of their way to be rude, but I think as a whole, it isn't like that. Jillio's right in that you don't know who exactly is "shying" away from you in a 3-foot circle. There are hearing people at any deaf event, any deaf club, etc. (Yes, even at a deaf club. We get plenty of CODAs and hearing spouses of deaf participants at the deaf club here, and I'm sure it's the same at most, if not all, other deaf clubs) that you don't really know who exactly is around you. It almost feels like you're singling out deaf people for being afraid of blind people, and several people here in this thread have already said otherwise.

Exactly.

Yes please folks, more questions about blindness?

I'm delighted that you all wanted to be educated on blindness instead of going ahead and making false assumptions. So keep them coming! <smile>

How do you guys read threads on the forum? (As in keeping up with them)

Do you usually read the full indexed link page or just hop over to the first thing that you are interested in checking out?

Like what I'm trying to say is, what I/I don't know if other people do this but I skim over much of the posts first to see which ones have been replied in response to me so that I can immediately give a reply back. I wonder, how is it that you guys are able to keep up?
