Questions and debates about blindness:

when you look at my eyes, you can't see them because my eyelids are 95% closed. if you look hard enough, you can tell that they are open, but only a little.

:laugh2: sounds like me!

I don't "look blind" either. My eyes wander outwards a bit but there are plenty of sighted folks with wandering eyes. Also sometimes my eyes are red but then it just looks like I'm tired.

i don't mean to sound offensive but for sighted folks with "wandering eyes" - we usually call them "crazy eyes" or "lazy eyes"

I was watching a program on tv the other night about deafblind triplets. Their mother took them to the doctor to get fitted for prosthetic eyes...now I thought it was a bit strange, myself as they already have eyes. Perhaps it was more for cosmetic reasons than health reasons?

Anyone here wear prosthetic eyes? Just curious. I wear contact lenses, myself. Not the same, I know.

If I recall correctly - one of you said that wearing prosthetic eyes are to prevent infection.

in my case.. which is because I'm Asian... they call it "slope" or "chinky eyes." It is bit insulting to me. but i can't help it for not having WIDE-OPEN eyes. :laugh2:

i'm not laughing at the fact that your eyes are the way they are, i'm laughing at your ability to joke about it.

yes, it is.

however, as long as a blind person's eyes are not causing pain, infection or are deformed in some way, there is no reason to have prothetics.

i could have prothetics to have more "natural" looking eyes (due to the fact that my eyelids are 95% closed), but i choose not to because it's not a big deal.

my eyelids are almost 95% closed too so I'm not seeing how having prosthetic will make your eyelids more open. will surgeon "alter" your eyelids?

my eyes are very small. if i were to have prothetics, there's a chance that my eyes could look more natural since the "shells" are designed in such a way as to keep the eyelids open.

in the discovery channel documentary about zoe hooker (a triplet who is deafblind), she received prothetics and her mother said that after she received them, everyone kept commenting on how pretty her daughter looked.

i also wanted to mention that i could have my eyelids sewn shut, but do not feel the need to do so. no one has ever commented on my eyes in a negative way, so i don't see any reason to have surgery.

in what way?

Because I use my residual vision so if I look at anything it makes me look sighted. A lot of people assume that blind people are receiving no visual information whatsoever, so if I respond to visual stimuli it leads to people thinking I'm sighted.

You wish you did? May I ask why?

Same here. When I get glaucoma headaches, I wish I had prosthetic eyes. The pain can be really intense, and sometimes I also have nausea from it. <unpleasant> Then again I have also heard that sometimes prosthetic eyes are painful, so I'm not sure if that's the best out from pain.

I have a tendency to close my eyes 95% especially in bright sunlight. However mine aren't naturally that way. In dimmer light my eyes are all the way open.

Right. In my experience, people usually refer to squint (strabismus) as "lazy eye" (even though technically "lazy eye" is another condition) and nystagmus (eyes shaking back and forth or "dancing") as "crazy eyes." I say "wandering eyes" cause my eyes literally look like they're wandering. My left eye has a tendency to wander outwards and downwards a bit. (It also "twists" inwards but that's not visible to others.) And my right eye just wanders outwards a bit.
