Questions and debates about blindness:

Have you ever been mistaken as a sighed person? Silly question really- I don't know why I asked.

Whenever i dont use my cane yes. I dont "look blind"

Ohh, my acting teacher said she caught me "not using my cane right" just because it isnt moving side to side all the time does not mean i am not using it...

Oh positive things about sighted folks... I love when store clerks place money or change in my hand. I have a hard time with judging distances and it's very awkward to miss the person's hand, especially when I'm looking at it and they can tell I can see it. <laughs> So the placing in my hand solves that issue.

I also like when friends of mine either uses their voice or come up to me before expecting me to recognize them. I don't like for my friends to think I don't recognize them when really I just don't see them.

I love when sighted folks give me directions that include words like "left," "right," and "straight ahead." ("Over there" or "that way" has little or no meaning to a blind person.)

Look blind? Not all blind people wear dark glasses, even I know that. :P As for the cane...I've seen a blind person walking without moving it side to side and I thought it was kinda odd. Perhaps it's been conditoned in me that it should move a certain way.

People dont tape canes side to side all the time, if i am in an environment, at school i know where the steps and such are, so it dosent always tap side to side, but there are places in that school *under the skylights* where i am totally blinded till i get out from under them where i am more than happy to use my cane "the normal way" I also do not use it "the correct way" when in a crowd because i know people do not appreciate being tapped accidentally.

As to the looking blind sometimes when you look at a blind person you can tell that they cannot see, but except for my nystagmus you cant tell if you look at me without a cane.

I don't "look blind" either. My eyes wander outwards a bit but there are plenty of sighted folks with wandering eyes. Also sometimes my eyes are red but then it just looks like I'm tired.

I was watching a program on tv the other night about deafblind triplets. Their mother took them to the doctor to get fitted for prosthetic eyes...now I thought it was a bit strange, myself as they already have eyes. Perhaps it was more for cosmetic reasons than health reasons?

Anyone here wear prosthetic eyes? Just curious. I wear contact lenses, myself. Not the same, I know.

No, but i know plenty of people that do *not for cosmetic reasons they were born without eyes* and sometimes i wish i did.

i'm totally blind from birth, but do not have prothetics. if there ever comes a time where my eyes bother me due to pain, i might consider it.

when you look at my eyes, you can't see them because my eyelids are 95% closed. if you look hard enough, you can tell that they are open, but only a little.

how on earth does your acting instructor know whether or not you are using your cane properly? she doesn't teach o&m.
